Jasyon Jones accounted for 281 yards of total offense and he
rushed and passed his way through the Saint James defense as the
Fultondale Wildcats avenged a home loss to the 2016 Trojans by a
convincing 46 - 21 margin.
For a rare occasion, Saint James did not possess the ball
first as the Wildcats won the toss and elected to
receive. Jones' start was not impressive as he
launched a backward pass on the first play which,
fortunately for him and the Wildcats, went out of bounds ten
yards behind the line of scrimmage. Despite a 12 yard
pass completion to Walter Blair on the next play, the Saint
James defense forced a punt. However, losses on the
first two Trojan carries led to a fourth and 15 and a punt
by Collin Duncan, who was replacing quarterback and punter
Josh Garnett who did not play. On the next drive,
Jones completed three short passes, one to his primary
receiver Lucas Wells. From the Trojan 31, Jones
carried for 18 yards and a first down, and on the next play
picked up 12 yards but fumbled. Fultondale was lucky
to fall on the ball, and on the next snap Blair carried in
for one yard for the first score of the game. The
extra point failed, but the Wildcats had a 6 - 0 lead with
four minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
Stephen Sadie picked up 22 yards on the next play from
scrimmage which would be the Trojans' only first down of the
first quarter, and one of only nine they would earn all
evening. However, a deep punt by Duncan pinned the
Wildcats at their own 12 yard line. Saint James'
defense forced a punt which was quite short, and the Trojans
ended the quarter with possession on the Wildcat 32.
Four consecutive runs by Sadie to start the second quarter
resulted in a fourth down and 4 at the Wildcat 16.
However, Sadie was stopped behind the line of scrimmage on a
fourth down attempt and the Wildcats responded
quickly. Wells picked up 45 yards on the next play on
the receiving end of a pass and run, and the field quickly
turned. The next two plays netted a loss of four
yards, but on fourth down from the Trojan 42, Fultondale
elected to go for the first down. They got that and
much more as Jones kept up the middle, found a hole in the
middle of the Trojan defense, and then outraced pursuers 42
yards for a touchdown. This time the kick by Jonathan
Victoriano-Aguilar was good, and the Wildcats were up 13 -
0.
After a good kickoff return by T.R. Robertson, an offside
penalty on third down gave Saint James a free first
down. Two Sadie runs earned the Trojans another first
down at the Wildcat 46. From there, Duncan lofted a
pass down the near sidelines and Robertson had beaten his
defender. The pass was lobbed perfectly to Robertson
at the 5 yard line and he waltzed in for the first Saint
James score. Jin Kim was perfect on extra points
again, and his first cut the Wildcat lead to 13 - 7 late in
the second quarter.
Fultondale wasted an absolutely golden opportunity to add a
touchdown just before halftime. They held the ball for
14 plays, exhausting nearly all of the second quarter clock,
before a third down and goal from the Trojan 6. Jones
picked up five yards on a keeper down to the Trojan 1, but
clock time was running out, Fultondale had used all of their
allotted timeouts, and confusion was running rampant
on the Wildcat sidelines as coaches were yelling all kinds
of instructions. Wells spiked the ball trying to stop
the clock, but he had forgotten it was fourth down, so the
Trojans took over on the stoppage of clock. One keeper
by Duncan was enough to run out the clock, and Saint James
was lucky to be within a touchdown at halftime.
A five yard penalty before the first offensive snap put the
Trojans in a hole, and after bright orange-sleeved Wildcat
Khalil Yow returned the ensuing punt 52 yards to the Trojan
15. It took one play for Blair to score on the wide
sidelines from 15 yards out, and the Aguilar kick boosted
the Fultondale lead back to 13 less than three minutes into
the third quarter. The kicking game failed Saint James
again as a snap over punter Duncan's head was recovered back
at the Trojan 10 yard line. Jones kept on the next
play for 10 yards and another touchdown. Less than 30
seconds of possession, and Fultondale had added 14 to their
total to boost the score to 27 - 7 midway through the third
quarter.
An out of bounds kickoff gave the Trojans good field
position, and they capitalized. After a one yard pick
up by Robertson, Duncan called his own number twice when
receivers were not available. A 26 yard run was
followed by a jaw-dropping 38 yard run through the
Fultondale secondary for a quick touchdown. Kim's
extra point cut the lead back to 13 in less than a
minute. A Wildcat unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on
the extra point gave Kim a chance to kick into the endzone,
which he did, and the fired up Trojan defense held
Fultondale to another short punt. Several Sadie runs
and a 17 yard pass from Duncan to Shaw Woodson, his only
completion other than the earlier touchdown, marched Saint
James to the Trojan 2. On the next play, Alex
Whisenhunt was called on for the final two yards and his
first touchdown of the year, and Kim's extra point suddenly
cut the 20 point lead back to 6, at 27 - 21, with still 14
minutes remaining.
A defensive pass interference penalty gave Fultondale a
first down at the Trojan 46, but the play of the game may
have been the final play of the third quarter as Wells
converted a fourth down and less than one by no more than an
eyelash, and a key first down and momentum for the Wildcats
going into the fourth quarter. Jones carried twice for
17 yards, and then Wells picked up his second touchdown of
the game on a nice 19 yard sprint. The missed extra
point, however, kept the lead at a manageable 12 points
early in the fourth quarter.
A fair catch on the ensuing kickoff pinned the Trojans back,
and two plays later a Duncan pass was tipped and intercepted
by Yow, who returned the ball to the Saint James 35.
Five consecutive keepers by Jones moved the ball down to the
Trojan 7, and Fultondale was again lucky to recover a wide
shotgun snap at the 15. On the next play, Jones found
his favorite receiver Wells for a 15 yard score which seemed
to eat up the remainder of the Trojan momentum.
Despite the missed extra point, Saint James was now three
scores behind at 39 - 21.
Unfortunately, the turnover bug hit the Trojans again.
After the fair catch on the previous kickoff, this time two
Trojans tried to field a pooch kickoff, muffed the ball, and
a Wildcat fell on the loose ball at the Trojan 25. A
converted fourth down run, one of the four (of five chances)
the Wildcats were successful on, and a face mask penalty
tacked on, gave Fultondale first down at the Trojan 6.
After a no gain, Blair picked up his third touchdown of the
game from 6 yards out, and within seven minutes, Fultondale
had broken a six point lead into what would be the final
margin of 25 at 46 - 21.
Two incomplete passes and a sack forced a Trojan punt from
deep in Trojan territory, and the Wildcats mercifully ran
out the remaining clock as they returned to Jefferson County
with their third impressive win of the young season, while
the shorthanded Trojans were still looking for answers as
they prepared to return to region action with a Homecoming
battle against Ashford on the horizon.
