November 11,
2016 Carlisle Field. Game
Conditions: Mostly cloudy, cool Game
Temperature: 61 Wind: negligible
After making a gallant stop on defense to end the first half and
keeping the game close, the fateful third quarter featured about
everything which could possibly go wrong for the Trojans,
including special teams errors, costly penalties, huge opponent
plays, and turnovers, as the Tallassee Tigers came to Carlisle
Field and took advantage of Saint James' woes while earning a
ticket to the 2016 playoff quarterfinals by defeating the home
team 42 - 14.
For one of the rare occasions this season, Saint James did not
possess the ball first as Tallassee won the coin toss and elected
to receive. On the third play from scrimmage, Tiger
quarterback Corey Baynes ripped up 45 yards on a keeper changing
the field from the Tiger 36 to the Trojan 19. However, three
plays later after a sack, a 38 yard field goal was forced and
drifted wide left, so the Trojan defense withstood its first
challenge of the night. Four plays later, Blake Underwood
virtually guaranteed his 3000 yard rushing career at Saint James
as his offensive line blew open a hole up the middle and he ran
basically untouched 69 yards for a touchdown. Jin Kim's
extra point gave Saint James an early 7 - 0 lead.
The Tigers would bounce right back, amongst the carries of
Markevious Matthews, Brady Hancock, and Baynes. On third
down from the Trojan 27, Baynes found an open Jacob Burton who
reached to make a great catch, and while doing so contorted his
body away from a potential tackler, for a catch and run
touchdown. Patrick Jockel added the tying extra point, and
the score was knotted at 7 late in the first quarter.
Saint James advanced to nearly midfield, but a forced punt was
deflected nearly straight up and only traveled forward 7 yards,
giving Tallassee great field position. Matthews picked up 30
yards on first down, and four plays later, on a fourth down and 3,
Baynes hooked up with Jamarcus Miller who was wide open in the
endzone for a second Tallassee touchdown pass. The extra
point gave the Tigers a 14 - 7 lead, one they would not
relinquish.
A bad snap to Underwood in a wildcat formation cost the Trojans 12
yards on the first play of the ensuing drive which eventually led
to a punt, and the Tigers used up most of the remaining first half
clock driving for yet another score. Baynes' 30 yard keeper
down the near sidelines advanced the ball to the Trojan 9, and his
simple keeper off tackle on first down had him just short of the
endzone. However, a Tiger bad snap forced the ball back to
the 5 on second down, and the Trojan defense somehow held the
Tigers out of the endzone again as Matthews was forced out of
bounds on a hard hit at the Trojan 2 on fourth down.
Tallassee had used all of its timeouts, so Saint James simply had
to run three plays to exhaust the second half clock and go to the
locker room relieved they were only behind by the one touchdown.
A quarter of horror started for Saint James as they prepared to
receive the second half kickoff. Nick Talley's kick
went about 20 yards forward, and with an amazing spin and
direction cut left directly toward the Trojan sideline in an area
where no receptors were available. The kick was fallen
upon just off the sidelines by Jamarcus Miller, and Tallassee was
in quick business at the Trojan 37. Six runs advanced the
ball down to the 16, and on third down Baynes lifted his third
touchdown pass of the evening, this one again to Burton, and the
Tallassee sidelines were rocking as they were suddenly up 21 - 7
after the Jockel extra point.
A line drive kickoff was caught by Jackson Hammock at the 41 yard
line, and on the next play Underwood almost duplicated his
previous touchdown jaunt, finding a big hole and running up the
middle pulling away from Tallassee defenders as he raced 59 yards
for a Trojan touchdown this time. Kim's extra point quickly
switched the momentum back to the Trojan side of the field as the
score was now 21 - 14 in favor of the Tigers, still early in the
third quarter.
Saint James had not committed a penalty the entire game until this
point. It seemed as if on the next drive they were making up
for penalty absence. On third down and 16, Baynes completed
an 8 yard pass to Logan Goodman. However, what proved to be
a costly defensive holding penalty which was called added 10 yards
to the end and resulted in a first down. On the next play, a
15 yard run by Matthews was doubled by a 15 yard face mask penalty
on the tackle, and suddenly Tallassee was approaching the Trojan
red zone. After a few more running plays, and an
encroachment penalty just short of the endzone, Baynes on a keeper
was able to back into the endzone for a Tallassee touchdown.
A botched snap resulted in a missed extra point opportunity, but
the Tigers were back up by 13 late in the third quarter.
Amazingly, and unexpectedly, Talley pulled off an almost identical
left curving onside kick which was recovered again just a yard or
so inbounds by Jamarcus Miller, and the Saint James offense
unfortunately stayed on the sidelines. On the following
play, Matthews broke open through a similar hole as Underwood had
done for the Trojans twice before, and likewise Matthews pulled
away for a quick 31 yard touchdown. He was also rewarded
with a two point conversion run which he too easily converted, and
Tallassee had begun to almost instantly pull away with a 35 - 14
lead.
Saint James tried to pick up yardage via short passes, as Jackson
Raybon, T.R. Robertson, and Atchison Hubbard each gained
yardage. However, on fourth down and 5 inside Tiger
territory, after a Saint James time out, the punt team was called
for. Garnett's uncovered punt rolled dead at the 10 yard
line, and it appeared to be Mission Accomplished on that
point. However, the next play erased any semblance of
momentum as Matthews took a handoff straight up the middle and
zoomed 90 yards through and past a tiring Trojan secondary for
what would be the last score of the game as the third quarter
neared completion.
Colin Duncan returned a kickoff, which in itself was notable as
his was the only kickoff all night (of 7) where return yardage was
gained. However, on the next play, Casey Baynes showed his
defensive prowess as he intercepted a Garnett pass to virtually
seal the game as the third quarter concluded. For the first
time all night, the Tigers were forced to punt, but they pinned
the Trojans back at their own 15 yard line. Duncan was the
recipient of a long 31 yard pass on the Tiger sidelines two plays
later, but then Garnett tossed his second interception in as many
drives, this one again to Baynes, and Saint James' hopes were
fading
Tallassee managed to eat up an amazing nine minutes off the fourth
quarter clock and likely would have easily scored upon reaching
the Trojan two yard line. However, Baynes downed the ball
four consecutive plays, using valuable clock time between snaps,
and Saint James got its last offensive possession of the season
with only 40 seconds remaining. A personal foul penalty
after the opening play was a fitting close for a very choppy and
sloppy second half, but Tallassee celebrated and looked forward to
the third round of the playoffs putting an end to a nevertheless
successful Trojan season with a 10 - 2 record.
Some very interesting notes from the below game statistics.
Tallassee ran 64 offensive plays to only 27 for Saint James.
The time of possession was nearly triple for the Tigers.
However, the Trojans were making yardage, thanks in great part to
the two breakaway runs by Blake Underwood in his final game for
Saint James. Saint James averaged over 10 yards a rush for
only the fifth time in school history in this game. Amerson,
who had only 6 carries, still added upon his 1000 plus rushing
season and will be looked forward to in the upcoming season.
Until then!
