October 4, 2013 Carlisle Field. Game Conditions: Partly cloudy,
breezy early Game Temperature: 82
Wind: E 10-15, decreasing
Despite three long Saint James touchdown plays, first time
Carlisle Field visitor Charles Henderson verified their # 3 state
4A ranking by breaking open a close game while scoring three
touchdowns of their own in the last four minutes of the first half
and maintaining control in the second half in the battle of the
Trojans to remain undefeated with a 42 - 21 victory.
Saint James moved the ball on the opening possession of the game,
picking up three first downs - by consecutive defensive offside
penalties, a 13 yard pass reception by Jalen Harris, and a 12 yard
run by Frank Moody. However, the drive stalled just across
midfield, and Charles Henderson was pinned inside the 20 yard
line. The teams traded punts in a defensive first quarter,
but Charles Henderson drove 61 yards on their second possession
which concluded with a 30 yard touchdown catch and run by Joshual
Noel tossed by Austin Ingram, the first of three such touchdown
combinations on the evening. The extra point kick was wide,
but Charles Henderson had a 6 - 0 lead late in the first quarter.
Saint James could not take advantage of a short kickoff and
punted, but forced Charles Henderson into a three and out of their
own. However, Ingram, who was also the Henderson punter,
pinned the home team back at its own 13. Two runs by Moody
only gained three yards, and after a quick and curious time out by
the defense, Connor Collier went for broke and sent Jonathan
Robinson deep down the near sidelines on a pass. The toss
went just over the extended arms of a potential defender and
Robinson cradled it and scampered the remaining distance for an 84
yard touchdown pass, just one yard short of the all-time Trojan
record. The opponents were in disbelief as Coleman Taylor
kicked the extra point and Saint James suddenly had a 7 - 6 lead.
A holding penalty and one of several dropped passes by Henderson
receivers stalled the next drive, but a sack prevented Saint James
from taking advantage. A nifty punt return by John Johnson
moved the ball into Saint James territory. Mondarius Dixon
carried for 4 yards on first down, and then Isom Coley carried for
32 on the next play. From the eight yard line, Johnson took
the handoff on the next play and miraculously avoided a tackle
five yards behind the line of scrimmage, tiptoeing forward down
the sidelines for an eight yard touchdown run. A two point
conversion pass failed, but Henderson had regained the lead at 12
- 7 with about 4 minutes remaining in the half.
Disaster struck on the kickoff return as a fumble was recovered by
Charles Henderson at the Saint James 26. Two plays later,
Ingram found Noel open in the endzone after a long scramble for a
14 yard touchdown. The same combination also worked on a two
point conversion attempt, and Charles Henderson was suddenly up 20
- 7 as the half neared conclusion. Unfortunately for Saint
James it did not end soon enough as they were stopped on a 3 and
out, giving Henderson one more chance to score with 77 seconds
left until halftime. Despite having no timeouts remaining,
Ingram moved the Trojans down the field by both the passing route
and the running route, and his connection on a slant pattern to
Noel with just 11 seconds remaining on a 9 yard touchdown was
demoralizing for the home side. A second consecutive two
point conversion pass from Ingram to Noel gave Charles Henderson a
comfortable 28 - 7 halftime lead which just minutes before had
been a one point deficit.
The teams traded pnnts on their opening third quarter possessions,
but it appeared Henderson was driving for perhaps a game-clinching
touchdown on their next drive. However, after another
completion from Ingram to Noel, the ball was knocked loose and
precariously bounced along but not onto the near sidelines, and it
was fallen upon by Saint James' Wells Hooper at the 4 yard line,
temporarily preventing Henderson from adding to their lead.
However, on third down, a Collier pass was intercepted by Demario
Harris at the 18 yard line and returned for a touchdown, the first
interception return for a score against the Trojans in nearly four
years. This time Baylor Barnes did convert the extra point,
and Charles Henderson was up by 28 midway through the third
quarter.
A turnover plagued Saint James on the next drive as a fumble near
midfield was scooped up by Jermaine Parker, who returned the ball
to the Saint James 16. On fourth down and 1 from the 7,
Ingram executed a quarterback sneak, but with perhaps some help
had so much momentum he carried players from both teams in a scrum
into the endzone for a 7 yard touchdown and Barnes boosted the
lead to 42 - 7.
Saint James needed something good to happen, and it did.
After a short kickoff return, Henderson again curiously called a
timeout. On the next play, Frank Moody was given a basic
handoff to the left side, cut back to the right finding a hole,
and managed to outrun surprised Trojan defenders 78 yards for a
touchdown, which tied for the seventh longest rushing touchdown in
school history. Taylor's extra point cut the lead to 42 -
14. The next three posessions leading into the fourth
quarter all resulted in punts, and the Saint James Junior Varsity
was rewarded with their recent outstanding play in Junior Varsity
games to play against yet still quite a few Henderson
starters. Dozier Dean and M.J. Melendez alternated as
quarterback and Blake Underwood and Justin Runyan ran
nicely. However, no one expected a handoff to primary
blocking back Tait Holder, especially Charles Henderson. On
his first carry of the season, Holder broke through the left side
of the defense, into the secondary, and pulled away for a 44 yard
touchdown of his own. Taylor's extra point, his eleventh
consecutive made over the last three games, made the score a
highly respectable 42 - 21 eventual final with Saint James looking
forward to their third strong opponent in a row at Carlisle Field
the following week in the regional matchup against the Beauregard
Hornets.
