Saint James took advantage of several Bullock County miscues,
including fumble recoveries, interceptions, and fourth down stops
on fake punts, and was the recipient of excellent field position
drive after drive as the Trojans, who have never lost in Bullock
County, were victorious once again over the Hornets by a 49 - 6
margin.
The Trojans took the opening possession and drove smartly down the
field for their first score. Ivan Villageois fielded a short
kickoff and returned it to the Trojan 40. Jake Sharp
actually started at quarterback, for three plays, and carried once
for four yards. Connor Collier took over and completed
passes of 15 yards to Jaylen McCoy and of 27 yards to Jalen
Harris, moving the ball down to the Hornet 8. After a Frank
Moody run of 6 yards and a defensive offside penalty, Moody dove
in from the one for the first score of the game. Coleman
Taylor kicked the first of seven consecutive extra points to give
Saint James an early 7 - 0 lead.
Bullock County actually kept the ball on their opening drive for
nearly half of the first quarter, but could only manage one first
down - on a fourth down punt which turned into a fake/run because
of the Trojan pressure. Roderick Burgess actually picked up
big yardage, but a block in the back penalty downfield pushed the
ball back into Hornet territory. A holding penalty would
stall the drive, and a deflected punt still carried to the Saint
James 45. Moody and Jonathan Robinson were the primary yard
gainers in the second drive, and three plays after the conclusion
of a swiftly moving first quarter, Collier snuck in from inside
the one for a touchdown and a 14 - 0 lead.
The Hornets went three and out on their next drive, and this time
were stopped short on another punt which became a desperation
run. Moody converted a fourth down with a 6 yard run for a
first, and several plays later Collier found Nolan Fields wide
open for his first touchdown catch of the season, giving the
Trojans a 21 - 0 advantage midway through the second quarter.
Michael Robinson boomed kickoffs throughout the night, giving the
Hornets average at best field position. On the first play of
the next drive, the ball was ripped away from Da'Quan Wilson and
fallen upon by Brad Murry for a quick turnover. Moody picked
up 23 of the 26 yards needed on first down, his longest carry of
what would be a short evening for himself and the remaining
starters. Jaylen McCoy carried in from the 3 on the next
play for the third touchdown of the quarter and a 28 - 0 lead.
Bullock County did pick up one of their four game first downs on
the next drive, but punted again, leaving the Trojans with nearly
a minute and a half to try and perhaps score one more time.
However, after an incomplete pass, disaster struck as Collier was
sacked well behind the line of scrimmage and the ball was knocked
out in the process before being fallen on by a Hornet. On
the next play, TeQuarius McKinnes lofted a high pass into the
endzone to the waiting arms of his tall receiver Octavius Rumph,
and the Hornets had scored. A two point conversion run
failed, but Bullock County had dented the scoreboard with a
fraction over 50 seconds remaining until halftime as the Trojans
gave up their first points after a turnover all season.
An out of bounds kickoff at the Saint James 38 gave the Trojans
yet another chance to score. McCoy ran for 17 on first down,
and Harris caught a pass over the middle for 25 yards on the next
play, moving the ball down to the Hornet 20. A short pass
completion, a recovery of a fumbled snap, and an incompletion left
the ball at the Hornet 22 with 5 seconds remaining. Farris
Abdullah came in to attempt a 40 yard field goal, but it was just
short and just wide left. However, Saint James seemed to be
in control despite the late half hiccups with a 28 - 6 lead.
The opening kickoff of the second half set the tone of what was to
be a disastrous third quarter for the Hornets. Robinson's
kickoff hit the potential Hornet receiver on the helmet and
bounced backwards, fortunately for him and Bullock County just
reaching the endzone where it was fallen on for a touchback.
Two plays later, McKinnes appeared to have run for a first down,
but the ball was stripped and recovered by Villageois at the
Hornet 31. Moody carried twice for 20 yards, and Robinson
carried three consecutive times for the final 11 yards - the third
carry of five yards good for a touchdown and a 35 - 6 Saint James
advantage.
A sack on the Hornets' next drive on third down was followed by
another unsuccessful fourth down fake punt attempt, and McCoy
carried twice, for 3 and 21 yards, for yet another Trojan
touchdown, and a 42 - 6 lead still early in the third
quarter. A new quarterback on the next drive meant trouble
as the snap was bobbled on the first play and the ensuing fumble
was recovered by Coleman Taylor. By now, the offensive
starters had left the game, and Justin Runyan was handed the ball
on five consecutive runs of 0, 4, 13, 0, and 4 for his first
touchdown of the season and what would become the final margin of
49 - 6.
Trojan Atchison Hubbard intercepted a deep pass on the next
Bullock County drive and returned it smartly to the Hornet
48. Blake Underwood carried several times, and a key
defensive offside penalty helped the Trojans convert a first
down. Runyan ran for 21 on the last play of the third
quarter for another first down, and amazingly for the third
consecutive season, the coaches mutually agreed to shorten the
fourth quarter to six minutes as the game had been decided.
Third string quarterback Dozier Dean was leading the team, and
Runyan and Underwood moved the ball down the field to inside the
Bullock County 10 before they were stopped on fourth down.
However, Wells Hooper picked off another pass on the next play,
the fifth Hornet turnover, first time varsity quarterback
Tony Douglass politely downed the ball to run out the shortened
clock, and the Trojans looked forward to three straight games at
Carlisle Field against considerably tough opposition - Trinity,
Beauregard, and Charles Henderson.
