HOMECOMING, Carlisle Field. Game conditions:
Clear Game temperature: 71
Wind: none
Saint James scored three touchdowns within a four minute span
during the first quarter and was never headed as the home gold
jerseys provided "The Midas Touch" helping the Trojans clinch a
playoff berth and a first round home game in a 42 - 0 Homecoming
victory over first time Carlisle Field visitor
Hillcrest-Evergreen.
Hillcrest picked up one first down on their opening drive as
Kyantrae Lewis, one of fourteen different Jaguar rushers on the
evening, carried for 30 yards on the second play. However,
after a loss, two incomplete passes, and the first of a handful of
illegal procedure penalties, Hillcrest punted. Duncan kept
on first down up the middle for 23 of the total 59 rushing yards
the Trojans would amass. Several plays later, after the
drive was slowed, Riley Newton was going to attempt what would
have been a school record 54 yard field goal. However, a
delay of game penalty pushed the potential placekick five yards
back, and Saint James opted for the punt instead.
Once again the Jaguars picked up a solitary first down, as
starting quarterback Keyshawn Roache rushed for 21. However,
incomplete passes led to another punt, and Saint James was on
their way to a mini-scoring frenzy of 21 points in four
minutes. After Walker Woodson was stopped on first down for
no gain, Duncan found him open deep down the far sidelines for a
39 yard completion. Two plays later, Duncan lofted a pass to
Jake Jabour, who had outraced his defender to the endzone to haul
in a 24 yard touchdown pass. Austin Meadows came in to
convert the first of his four extra point attempts, and the
Trojans were up 7 - 0 midway through the first quarter.
Disaster struck the Jaguars as the kickoff, which came down just
short of the goal line, was fielded by Trevin Rudolph who juggled
the ball early and was hit, jarring the ball loose, which Trojan
Chase Ritter fell upon at the Hillcrest 19. Duncan went back
to work immediately, tossing a 15 yard completion to Graham
Norwood, and on the next play he scored virtually untouched on a
four yard keeper touchdown. The extra point helped double
the lead to 14 - 0.
Saint James would strike again several minutes later. On
third and eleven from the Hillcrest 39, Roache lofted a pass which
was overthrown and intercepted by Jabour. He freed himself
from the intended receiver turned potential tackler, and rushed
down the near sidelines with a host of gold-shirted Trojan
blockers. Two Jaguars, including the quarterback Roache had
an angle, and managed to break through the blocks and tackle
Jabour after a 58 yard interception return at the Hillcrest
18. Duncan carried for four on first down, twelve on second
down, and handed off to Woodson who dove off right guard for a
third first quarter touchdown and an early 21 - 0 lead.
The teams then traded punts, and Hillcrest was in the midst of its
best drive of the evening. Cordarius Mims, who did not play
in the first quarter, had fresh legs and carried several times for
big yardage first downs. His 27 yard run gave the Jaguars
first down at the Trojan 8, but on the next play he fumbled and
Austin Meadows recovered back at the fifteen, ending that scoring
threat. Hillcrest forced another Saint James punt, but later
on fourth and ten from the Trojan 28, Keith Richardson was stopped
for no gain on a reverse attempt, and Saint James had held yet
again.
Three plays later they were in the endzone as time was elapsing in
the second quarter. Wilson Adams made a great diving
catch to snare in a 39 yard completion. Duncan was forced to
scramble on the next play, but gained seven yards. On the
next play, he saw Woodson open near the corner of the endzone and
found him with a 26 yard scoring toss. The extra point gave
the Trojans a huge 28 point advantage going into halftime, as
Hillcrest could not reach midfield before the horn sounded, and in
halftime festivities Hannah Hoover was crowned 2011 Homecoming
Queen.
After the obligatory five yard delay of game penalty for the
ceremonies running just a few minutes over allotted time,
Hillcrest's only kickoff of the evening was returned by Jabour to
the Trojan 35. Woodson and Frank Moody each ran for first
downs, but Saint James opted to punt later, pinning Hillcrest at
their own 4. They could not earn a first down, and a high
pop punt bounced and landed squarely at the Jaguar 26. After
a potential Duncan touchdown pass was dropped, he ran for four on
second down, and on third down threw his third touchdown pass,
this time to Moody on a beautiful crossing route for 22
yards. Riley Newton, kickoff specialist, handled the extra
point duties on the second half touchdowns, and the Trojans were
up 35 - 0 midway through the third quarter.
The Jaguars held the ball the remainder of the quarter.
Richardson picked up a first down on a fake punt run, and appeared
to have an even longer gain on a second fake punt run, but it was
called back by a holding penalty which ended up costing Hillcrest
a net of 54 yards on the final play of the third quarter. On
fourth down, a bad snap back to the regular punter was muffed and
dribbled around before it was finally fallen upon at the
five. It took the Trojans four downs, but Duncan carried in
from the two on that fourth play, his last and the last for many
of the starters, and Newton's extra point iced the scoring at 42 -
0.
Reserves on both teams played on both sides of the ball the
remainder of the game, and neither team earned a first down the
rest of the way. Hillcrest did take over after a bobbled
punt snap on the Saint James 20, but a great endzone pass breakup
by Jake Sharp and a fourth down loss continued the shutout
possibility. The Jaguars had one last chance to score, but
on fourth and eight from the Saint James 43 they were again
stopped for a loss on fourth down and Griffin Slater once again
performed his duties for the team simply downing the ball in the
victory formation as Saint James not only clinched a winning
season but locked up a first round home playoff matchup three
Friday nights down the road against a to-be-determined opponent,
only the second time since 2000 when the AHSAA went almost
exclusively to eight team regions.
