1986 The St. James Boys
Varsity Basketball team won its first ever game against Alabama
Christian in the Tine W. Davis gymnasium (the
gymnasium where Alabama Christian College {now Faulkner University}
played) with a thrilling 51 - 49 victory which started the
Trojans on a 13 game winning streak.
2005 Elizabeth Richards
scored 32 points, the 28th point being her 1000th career point, with 21
of those coming on 7 three point field
goals
as the
Lady Trojan basketballers defeated Brewbaker Tech 64 - 39.
JAN 5
JAN 6
2006 Kelly Michelle Lewis
converts NINE three point shots, tying a St. James Varsity Girls'
basketball
record. Kelli Christian adds FOUR to
make a
total of 13 - another girls' school record - as St. James travels to
Trinity and defeats the Lady Wildcats 51 - 36. 39 of
the total
of 51 points for the Trojans were scored from behind the "arc".

career high 30 points, as the
St. James Trojans broke open a close game in the second quarter on the
way to defeating the Tallassee Tigers 76 - 49.
1995 Jan Shearer became the second
girl in St. James history to score 1000 career points in basketball as
she converted a three point play
at the beginning of the game en route to a 57 - 44 victory over the
Calhoun Lady Tigers.

2008 Chase Eley set a new record for
most
three-pointers in a season by a St. James Varsity Boys Basketball
player, by connecting on his 51st

1998 Meredith Darneille reached the 1000
career basketball point plateau as she led the Trojans to a 61 - 51
home victory over Alabama Christian.
JAN 31
2009 Chase Eley scored 24 points,
including his 1000th point, and broke his own school record with his
62nd three pointer of the season as the
Trojans defeated Highland Home 61 - 49. He and Chase Christian
both broke 1000 points in the same season, becoming the first Trojan
teammates to do so. The game was also the first "Coaches for
Cancer" effort at St. James, as donations were accepted and a portion
of the
admission was donated to the American Cancer Society. First year
coach Vincent Royals was instrumental in making St. James basketball
a part of the Coaches for Cancer
nationwide program.

2004 Hillary Barnes reached the 1000
career basketball point plateau, actually, the 1004 point plateau,
becoming only the second St.
James player to
score
50 in
a game, as she tallied 50 against the LAMP Golden Tigers in an 82 - 13
victory. She also set
the school girls' record with NINE
three point
baskets, just one short
of the overall school record set by Adam Mills several
weeks before.
1996 Rob McGaughey reached the 1000
career point mark in basketball as well, in a 76 - 71 loss at
Trinity. His celebration was delayed until two
games later, the next home game, against Alabama Christian.
McGaughey would return home to coach the Junior Varsity Boys basketball
team in the 2007-08 season.
FEB 3
2007 St. James seniors Kevin Hale
and Elizabeth Alter pulled off a double championship in Long Jump, each
winning at the 2007 1A-4A State
Indoor Track meet at Priceville. Their finishes helped the STJ
boys finish 9th overall, and the STJ girls finish 4th at the state
meet. Hale's
jump was 20' 2.75" and Alter's was 15' 8".

FEB 7
1995 Ken Klinger, senior basketball
player who would later become the St. James Varsity Basketball Coach in
2005, scored his 1000th career point
during the Trojans' 50
- 44 victory over Montgomery Academy.
2009 Chris Henry (see below FEB 9) won
his second consecutive state championship in Huntsville at the 1A-4A
State Wrestling Meet. This time
his championship was in the 112 pound weight class. The Trojans,
who for the second year sent seven wrestlers to the state tournament,
had its best ever team finish, fifth, with 66 points. Matt Kwan
finished as a state runner-up in the 105 pound weight class which Henry
vacated this season. Stephen Kwan (119 pounds) and Michael Bird
(152 pounds) each finished third in their respective classes as well.

FEB 9
2008 Chris Henry won a state championship
in Huntsville at the State Wrestling Meet - as the champion in the
1A-4A 103 pound weight division.
He was one of a record-tying seven wrestlers to qualify for the state
tournament. Henry garnered most of the Trojans' 37 total points,
good
enough for a 12th place finish overall. Henry was only the second
St. James Wrestler to win a state championship.

FEB 12
2009 For the second straight year, the
St. James Lady Trojan basketballers eliminated Alabama Christian from
the state playoffs in the sub-state
round of the state tournament playing at the Eagles gym. This
year, despite only scoring 11 points in the first half and trailing by
9, the Trojans
outscored ACA 38 - 20 in the second half on their way to a 49 - 40
victory. Hope Olszewski led St. James with 18 points.
FEB 13
1989 Leslie Claybrook became the third
leading rebounder in United States High School Girls history at the
time, passing basketball legend Cheryl
Miller, star
of several University of Southern California and professional teams, as
she collected 19 rebounds (giving her a total of 1625 career,
surpassing
Miller's 1620) in the Trojans' 63 - 37 area tournament defeat of
Montgomery Academy. The Trojans were ahead 61 - 17 at the
end of the third quarter
before all the starters were taken out of the game.
FEB 14
2004 Taylor Nelson hit a heavily-pressured 30
foot 3 pointer as
the buzzer sounded to send the 4A Area 5
Championship game into overtime and the
Trojans eventually
pulled off
a thrilling 77 - 75
double overtime victory over the Beauregard Hornets. (GAME
RECAP)
1986 The St. James Lady basketballers
upset previously # 1 ranked Linden, fresh off an upset loss in their
area tournament, 47 - 46 in the sub-state
round
of the 1986 2A State Basketball tournament. St. James was up
29 - 18, but was outscored 22 - 3 as Linden took a 40 - 32 lead before
the Trojans
went on a
12 - 0 run, holding Linden shotless, much
less scoreless, over a 3:50 span in the final quarter.
1984 Courtenay Miles hit both ends of a 1
and 1
with 12 seconds left to lead St. James over the 1983 State Girls
Basketball Champion Edward Bell
34 - 33, and into
the State Final
Four in Birmingham for the first time in school history. The
margin
was the Lady Trojans'
only lead in the
second half of
the game, played at St. James.

one a week earlier in the area tournament
finals. However, in the third substate round of the State
Tournament, the Lady Trojan basketballers ended Trinity's season at
20 - 3 with a
shocking 70 - 50 victory at Trinity. Kristy Edwards had a triple
double with 27 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. Bethel
Dimaggio added 16
points, and Mary Sylvest held Trinity's high-scorer Julie Harrington, a
30+ point per game scorer, to 20 points and only 6 of 22 shooting.

2005 St. James traveled to Troy to
play a baseball doubleheader at Troy University's Riddle-Pace
Field. In
game one, Bruce Alter's double in the
eighth inning
completed a comeback as the Trojans defeated Tuscaloosa County, the
defending 2004 6A state runner up, 2 - 1. Taylor
Thompson
pitched a
strong eight innings,
allowing no earned runs. In game two, Alter and Adam Mills, who
hit 2 home runs, led the Trojans
to a 12 - 1 five
inning win
over
the Charles Henderson Trojans, the 2004 defending 5A state champions.

sport, St. James hosted the second AHSAA
game in Montgomery, opening their second season with a 4 - 3 win over
visiting Midfield. Bryan Jernigan, Gabe Harris, Lee Walker, and
Karl
Fangmeier each scored a goal in the victory.
2007 Joe Goodson and Halen Weldon
tossed a combined no-hitter in a 4½ inning Trojan Junior Varsity
11 - 0 baseball win over Catholic's Junior
Varsity. This game followed immediately after a St.
James/Catholic varsity matchup where 38 hits and 35 runs were scored
between the two
teams in an error-filled contest. St. James did win the varsity
game 19 - 16.

1993 The St. James Baseball Team
travelled to Holtville to play a game postponed a week earlier by the
1993 Super Storm. Chris Armstrong struck
out 9 in 5 1/3 innings of relief as the Trojans defeated the Bulldogs 8
- 6. St. James then hurried back to Montgomery to play a regularly
scheduled game later that afternoon against Trinity. Hunter
Pappas drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to
give the
Trojans a 7 - 6 win and a sweep of a peculiar doubleheader.
1998 The St. James Baseball Team
trailed Montgomery Academy 11 - 6 going to the bottom of the seventh
inning, but managed a 6-run comeback,
highlighted by Speed McDonald's game-ending walk off homerun, to defeat
the Eagles 12 - 11.

teams in the United States
by Baseball America at the time. Joyner also was
credited with
the victory, pitching the final two innings, and had two hits including
a
double as well.
APR

17 1991 St. James
scored 5 runs in the top of the seventh inning in a come-from-behind
6 - 5 baseball win over Alabama Christian to capture the area title.
Four of the runs scored after two were out. Tim Kreger's single
knocked in Ken Turnipseed for the go-ahead run. The Eagles
had a runner on
third base with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but the Trojans
did not allow him to score to secure the victory and area championship.

Scott Price claimed both the 1600 meter and 3200 meter run titles in
the 4A State Outdoor Track
Tournament in Tuscaloosa, helping St. James to
a sixth place
finish
statewide.
2010 Win Woodson, a seventh grader at St.
James, won the Javelin Throw contest at the 4A State (Varsity) Track
Meet in Gulf Shores. Her throw was
110 feet, 6 inches - a huge increase over her winning 98 feet 11 inch
throw earlier in sectionals, and 2½ feet further than her
nearest competitor.
Hope Olszewski, a St. James senior, finished third with a toss of
nearly 105 feet. These two performances resulted in 16 of
the 33 points which
were totalled by the St. James ladies, leading to a sixth place finish
statewide.

1990 St. James hosted its first ever soccer
game, played on Carlisle (football) Field. Jim Bailey scored both
goals for the Trojans as they earned
a 2 - 2
draw
with neighboring Catholic. The Trojans had played 7
games prior, in the temporary Central Alabama Youth Soccer League,
before hosting
their first game.
MAY 5
1994 Jan Shearer hit three home runs (a grand
slam, a 3-run, and a solo) and drove in a total of 10 runs as St. James
walloped Highland Home 19 - 8
in a softball matchup.
2007 Katie Bright, several days after injuring
two fingers on her throwing hand, set a new 4A State record at the
State Track and Field Meet, taking home
a state championship by throwing her javelin 119 feet, 9 inches, easily
breaking the old record of 113 plus feet. The girls placed sixth
in the 2007
Outdoor State Meet despite only several
participants. Her record was broken two years later by Carla
Pettus of Rogers High by two feet.

1996 Erin Stough, who would earn the 1996 1A-4A
Fast Pitch State Tournament Most Valuable Player predominantly due to
her pitching, scored the
winning run of the deciding game in the bottom of the seventh inning by
stealing second, beating a throw to third on a bunt by Mary Hayden
Winn, and racing home on a passed ball. This helped the Trojans
to a 6 - 5
come-from-behind victory over Pleasant Grove. Meredith Darneille,
who also
was given consideration for Tournament MVP, hit a grand slam in the
fourth inning to get the Trojan offense going. This was the first
girls' team
championship in school history, and set the tone for what would
become arguably a softball dynasty in the upcoming years.
MAY 8
2007 The St. James softballers defeated the
Lady
Warhawks of Daleville 10 - 0 and 11 - 0 in a sub-state playoff round
one doubleheader. In the first
game, Robyn Harmon gave up 1 hit and struck out 13. In the
second game, Kelly Brasfield pitched a 6 inning perfect game and
struck out
15 (including
each of the first 9 batters), allowing only three infield outs when
the ball was put into play. One of those was a line drive which
Brasfield managed to block from her face and still pick the ball up and
throw
the runner out at first.

2008 Robyn Harmon, in her last career
home appearance, tied a state record by striking out 20 Thomasville

2008 Robyn Harmon closed out a
stellar softball career at St. James, pitching her third and fourth
consecutive shutouts (28 innings worth) in the
state 4A championship tournament, defeating Lawrence County 4 - 0, and
Ardmore 6 - 0, earning her third 4A Tournament MVP in four
years and giving the Trojans their fourth state championship in eight
years. She would later be named 4A Player of the Year and first
team
pitcher, Coach Karl Smeltzer was named 4A Coach of the Year, and Morgan
Mullen and Lauren Henry would also be named 4A first
team members, at second base and catcher respectively.
MAY 18
2006 St. James defeated Deshler 7 -
6 at Montgomery's Riverwalk Stadium to clinch their second state
baseball championship, exactly 15 years
to the day
after their
first. Sophomore Blaine Joyner, named Most Valuable Player of the
Tournament, pitched all 7 innings for the complete
game victory,
allowing only 1 earned run. He held the lead despite 5 Trojan
errors. He also went 4 for 4 at the plate in the final game, and
6 for 7 in
the final series. Jason Soriano's two run single in the top of
the sixth highlighted a three run inning as the Trojans overcame a 5 -
3
deficit for the two
game championship sweep.
1991 St. James defeated Cordova 4 -
1
in a game played at the nearby Dora field to win its first team
championship in any sport, this one baseball.
The entire second half of the season had been plagued by rainouts and
delays. After the second game of the best of three series was
controversially
"called" in the
top of the sixth inning with St. James down by only 1 and men on base
the
day before, a rain-soaked field at
Cordova necessitated
the move
to Dora. The Trojans scored 2 in the first. With the bases
loaded, Bryan Skelton scored on a wild pitch, and
later Tim Kreger's
bases-loaded walk forced home Rob Warren. The Trojans added a run
in the
bottom of the second as Stefan Delahay, who
pitched a complete game despite a back injury, scored on a Patriot
throwing error.
Cordova had the bases loaded with no outs in the fifth
inning, but
could only score
once on a double play and a grounder to shortstop. The Trojans
picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the
sixth as Danny Mayer
scored
on another bases-loaded walk, this one to Rob Warren, and St. James
held on in the top of the seventh to claim the
2A State
Championship. St. James had failed to play a single home game all
season.
MAY 19
2006 Robyn Harmon picked up two
wins in the first day of the 2006 State Softball Tournament. In
her second win of the day, a 3-0 victory over
Bibb County, she pitched a 7 inning perfect game. She would help
the
Trojans clinch their second consecutive softball 4A State Championship
the next day and would be named Most Valuable Player of the state
tournament for the second consecutive year.
MAY 20
2005 It may have been the day
Hyundai officially "opened" in Montgomery, but it was Robyn Harmon
pitching her third and fourth complete
games in two
days during the state softball tournament, all four victories, on her
way to Most Valuable Player of the 4A State Tournament.
Kylie Harmon and Kelly Michelle Lewis were also named to the All-State
Tournament Team.

1995 "Trojans Berry Knights In Mud" - the now classic
Montgomery Advertiser headline summed up the Catholic/St. James
football game.
The Trojans, 2 - 6 coming into the game, were playing 6 - 2 Catholic
for the runner-up spot and the associated playoff berth in 3A
Area 4. Catholic scored on their first drive, but the Trojan
defense and halfback/linebacker Mark Berry made it impossible for them
to score again, as the Trojans pulled one of their biggest upsets in
history, defeating the Knights 14 - 7 at a mud-covered Carlisle Field.

2003 St. James won perhaps its biggest
football playoff game to date, traveling to Ashford to face the # 9
ranked 9 - 1
Yellow Jackets. Will
Stansfield's
three field goals, a
late defensive stand, and a bizarre fake punt play by Ashford which was
negated by a penalty helped the
Trojans to an
ultra-exciting
22 - 20 first round
playoff upset. (GAME

entire
game at the basket on
the south end of the Trojan gymnasium. Jama
Hanna

Mike Johnson scored 12 points and was named
Tournament Most Valuable Player as St. James won at Montgomery Academy
for the
first
time ever, and only the
third time in 39 previous meetings
overall, as the Trojans captured
the 18th Annual Montgomery Academy Christmas
Basketball Tournament,
43 - 34. The Trojans were never invited again to this particular
tournament, which later was supplanted by the
Capital City Conference Holiday Tournament upon the formation of the
CCC.

1987 Leslie Claybrook scored 53 points for the
Lady Trojans, at that time a state record for most points scored in one
game for girls basketball
according to Ron Ingram, high
school editor of The
Birmingham News, as St. James defeated Trinity 75 - 71 in
overtime
in the second round of
the Blue Gray Tournament, played at Catholic High School. She was
literally hot that evening, as she had a 101 degree fever just before
the beginning of the game, debating on whether or not she should even

1995 The St. James basketball girls trailed Keith
42 - 28 going into the fourth quarter, but Kristen Kirkland's 20

pull out an
exciting 46 - 42 area victory in Keith's home gymnasium in Orrville.

2007 In what was believed to be a first time event,
St. James alumni faced off each other as coaches in a varsity athletic
event. Reg Mantooth (class of
1986) led his Oak Mountain
Eagles against Ken Klinger (class of 1995) and his St. James Trojans in
a boys basketball matchup - the championship
of the 2007 Wildcat Classic at Fultondale High School. 6A Oak
Mountain was 12 - 1 at the time, and defeated the Trojans, a surprise
entrant in
the tournament finals, 72 - 41. Mantooth was in his first year
coaching at Oak Mountain after a very successful career at Fort Dale
