It was a very long night for the Trojans to start the
season. A first quarter which took 45 minutes of clock
time to play, a 2 hour 20 minute lightning delay at halftime,
and a somewhat sloppy effort by both teams reminiscent of a
season opener gave Dadeville their first ever win over Saint
James as the Tigers pulled away late to defeat the Trojans 46
- 13.
Dadeville won the opening toss and deferred. Saint James
got off to a promising start after a pooch kickoff was fielded
and picked up 11 yards on each of their first two plays - a
run by Cameron Hartley and a pass from Michael Hassell to
Jordan Williams. However, the drive sputtered thanks to
a holding penalty, and on fourth down disaster struck as a
punt snap went over the punter and was fallen upon 36 yards
behind the line of scrimmage, giving the TIgers an immediate
red zone opportunity. A holding penalty stalled their
drive as well, and Landyn Whigham recovered a fumble on a
fourth down desperation quarterback run.
Saint James went three and out and gave the Tigers the ball on
the Trojan 48. Six plays later, Dadeville was in the
endzone courtesy of a 2 yard touchdown run by Corde Patterson,
his first of three on the evening. A personal foul
penalty was called. Instead of pushing the ensuing
kickoff back 15 yards, Saint James elected to enforce on the
extra point, and the attempted kick came up short.
However, Dadeville had a 6 - 0 lead late in the first quarter.
The Trojans were having early issues getting plays in a timely
matter and had to spend each of their first half timeouts in
the first 17 minutes of the game. A second consecutive
three and out gave Dadeville the ball on their own 43.
Patterson rushed for 17 on first down, and then backup
quarterback Gerraine Davis tossed a pass to Cale Hanks which
went for 45 yards and a quick second touchdown. The
extra point again failed, but the lead doubled to 12 - 0.
After being pinned deep on the kickoff, the Trojans were
forced to punt again. Another bad snap resulted in a
rushed punt which did not even make it back to the original
line of scrimmage, and Dadeville had first down at the Trojan
11.
On third down, Davis tossed a pass to Joshua Young for another
touchdown. Saint James blocked the extra point, but
Dadeville had scored three touchdowns (18 points) in less than
5 minutes of clock time.
The Trojans were finally able to drive into Tiger territory,
but were forced into another punt. The punt was fielded
at the one yard line, and apparently after running it back
several yards the referees decided the knee had contacted the
ground on the catch - so Saint James had Dadeville pinched in
at their own 1 yard line. A short gain was followed by a
crucial offside penalty, which gave Dadeville a chance to run
out the rest of the half as they had wasted their timeouts as
well. Within the last 10 seconds of the half, the Tigers
had driven down to the Trojan 11, but a rushed quarterback
threw an interception to Whigham which effectively exhausted
the first half clock.
It would be quite a while before play resumed. The Saint
James band had completed their first number of their program,
and the lightning which had been sorta threatening most of the
second quarter got close enough. Band and fans cleared
the field, and a severe thunderstorm parked over Tiger Stadium
for about 90 minutes as players and fans wondered what the
status of continuing the game would be.
Finally, the rain and wind stopped and the players were
allowed back on the field to warm up at 10:15 for a 10:30 PM
restart. A majority of the fans had left, but play
continued under a cooler far less humid atmosphere.
Dadeville received the opening kickoff, but Saint James picked
up their third turnover of the game on a fine interception by
Brannen Stewart. A holding penalty led to another Saint
James punt, but the inspired Trojan defense used a sack to
force a Tiger punt of their own. Saint James took over
on the Tiger 43 and drove for their first touchdown of the
season. Wilson Aman caught a 22 yard pass on first down,
and on the next play, Hartley took the handoff and burst
through the Dadeville line for a 21 yard scoot and
score. A bobble on the kick snap led to a wayward extra
point attempt, but the Trojan fans finally had something to
cheer about as they had cut the Dadeville lead to 18 - 6.
The Tigers, however, did not take long to respond. A 29
yard run by starting quarterback Davis McKelvey and a 13 yard
run by Patterson led to an immediate 17 yard quarterback sweep
by McKelvey and a touchdown. Again, Saint James blocked
the extra point, and the score was now 24 - 6 midway through
the third quarter.
At this point, there are few visual records of the remaining
plays of the game despite three different sources. The
Trojans would score on a 39 yard breakway run by Hartley, and
Ethan Tapia successfully converted the first extra point kick
of the game, and the Trojans seemed to have momentum, cutting
the lead to 24 - 13 late in the third quarter.
Dadeville would again score before the end of the quarter on a
drive boosted by a dubious pass interference penalty.
Patterson rushed in from 13 yards and, since extra point kicks
were not being made, a two point conversion run by McKelvey
was attempted. It was not successful either, and the
Tigers held a 30 - 13 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Tigers would score three times in the fourth quarter to
pull away. Patterson scored a touchdown on a run from
midfield, and kicker Phillip Baker converted an extra point
pushing the lead to 37 - 13.
Davis tossed his third touchdown pass on the next drive to
Brannon Holley, a 9 yarder, and Baker's extra point gave
Dadeville a 44 - 13 advantage.
Saint James would yield a defensive score as a fumble was
recovered by a Trojan player in their own endzone for a safety
- leading to the 46 - 13 final in a game which did not
conclude until 11:50 PM - nearly 5 hours after the start.
Because of the visual records issue - the statistics are below
are currently incomplete. Working to get those more
accurate, but we'll go with these until that time.
