Munford won the opening coin toss and elected to defer, giving Saint James the opening possession. From their own 39, and despite a defensive offside penalty, the Trojans found themselves with an early fourth down and 5. All of the offensive lineman lined up to the left of the center after a shift, and the ball was long snapped to potential punter Dylan Hines. However, he flipped the ball forward to Grant Phillips crossing the field away from the lineman, and he managed to power his way to the 50 yard line for a successful fourth down conversion on a fake punt. Phillips would convert yet another fourth down later on a 10 yard pass reception from Chase Perry, but several plays later Perry was intercepted by Tank Edmondson who returned the ball 35 yards to midfield and the opening Saint James drive was snapped.
A holding penalty on Munford slowed and eventually stalled their drive, and the Trojans took over after a punt to the 32 yard line. Mason Craig caught a 27 yard pass from Perry to advance the ball to the Lion 24, and two plays later Perry found a wide open Jackson Clifford in the middle of the field for a touchdown reception and Hines' extra point, the first of six, gave Saint James a 7 - 0 lead with just over 3 minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Lions picked up their initial two first downs on the next drive, but after the first play of the second quarter, a bizarre sequence of penalties occurred. To our best guess, from their own 41 yard line, Munford committed a dead ball personal foul and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was then added. Seconds later, there were unsportsmanlike conduct penalties assessed to both teams. The net result was Munford was penalized 28 yards, 15 for the personal foul and 13 (half the distance) for the unsportsmanlike conduct foul, giving them first down and 38 from their own 13 yard line. The Lions only gained 9 yards in 3 plays, and a shanked punt went out of bounds at the Trojan 37. It took one play for Saint James to capitalize, as Perry found Craig in the endzone for a 37 yard touchdown. Another unsportsmanlike penalty, this one against the Trojans, was flagged and would force the ensuing kickoff back to the 25. Hines' extra point did double the Trojan lead to 14 - 0 early in the second quarter.
Munford nicely returned their kickoff to the 44 yard line, but a fumbled snap on the first play recovered by Hines immediately gave Saint James the ball and good field position. Phillips broke off a 40 yard run down to the Lion 2, and on the next play Perry benefited from a "tush push" for a 2 yard touchdown, and the extra point gave Saint James a 21 - 0 lead still early in the second quarter. Another unsportsmanlike conduct penalty made Saint James kick off again from the 25 yard line. The Lion's first big play, a 42 yard pass from quarterback Brayden Nichols to Austin Wynn advanced the ball all the way to the Trojan 6, but the defense stiffened and forced a 20 yard field goal from Sergio Organo, which was good, and Munford had wiped the zero off the scoreboard trailing Saint James 21 - 3.
Saint James took only six plays to reach the endzone again. From their own 41, consecutive catches by Brayden Corley, of 32 and 27 yards, gave Saint James another touchdown and the extra point boosted the lead to 28 - 3. But there was still plenty of scoring to take place in the first half. On the fifth play of the next Lion drive, the previous successful pass play from Nichols to Wynn was called, and was even more successful and Wynn outraced his pursuer for a 46 yard catch and run touchdown. Organo's extra point cut the lead to 28 - 10 with just over two minutes remaining until halftime.
No problem. With Perry having to play defense as well as quarterback, he was given a quick break to start the next Trojan drive. For one play. Perry came back in and tossed consecutive passes to Corley for 31 and 18 yards to move the ball down to the Munford 25. After a sack, defensive offside and pass interference penalties gave the Trojans first down at the Lion 13 as time was running out. Saint James overcame their own penalty, and on thrid down from the 23, Perry found Corley again for a 20 yard completion to the 3 yard line with under 6 seconds remaining. On the final play of the half, Corley was the recipient again, this time on a 3 yard completion, and Hines' extra point ended an action and penalty packed second half and Saint James took a 35 - 10 lead to the locker room.
Yet another unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was called on the Lions at the end of halftime, so Hines was able to start the second half with a kickoff from the 45 yard line, which he boomed into the endzone for his first touchback of the season. Munford still drove 80 yards in a quick four plays to narrow the gap. Tank Edmondson ran virtually untouched the final 57 for a lion touchdown. The kick was wide left, but the lead was suddenly down to 35 - 16 early in the third quarter. Saint James was stopped after converting one first down primarily due to a sack and an intentional grounding penalty, so Hines pinned the Lions deep with a punt to their 17. Munford converted one first down but risked a fourth down and 7 as Nichols, who doubled as the punter, tossed an incomplete pass and the Trojans suddenly had first down on the Lion 30.
Several plays after a first down, a pass play which would have taken the ball inside the 10 yard line was negated by a holding penalty, but the Lions returned the favor on the next play with a pass interference penalty giving the Trojans a first down at the Munford 14. On the first play of the final quarter, Perry tossed a pass to Craig who wrestled himself away from a tackler and dove into the endzone - his second touchdown catch and Perry's fifth touchdown pass. The extra point gave the Trojans a comfortable 42 - 16 lead.
By now both teams were substituting literally, although many of the Munford first string skill players remained in the game. The Lions moved down the field and got as close as the Trojan 9, but an incomplete pass which would have been negated by an illegal formation turned the ball over to Saint James. Will Blackwell guided the Trojans down the field, with the assistance of the running of Ford Bass and including converting an impressive 3rd down and 26 yards to go with a 30 yard pass to Wilson Aman for a first down. The Trojans ate up a majority of the fourth quarter clock, and Blackwell's pooch punt pinned the Lions back at the 7 yard line. Three plays later, however, Kadarian McCoy broke off an 82 yard touchdown run to complete the scoring after Edmondson scored on a two point conversion. Saint James safely recovered a squib kick and ran out the remaining time to secure the 42 - 24 victory and the precious first round home playoff spot against a yet to be determined opponent. Saint James would have a well-earned week off before that first round playoff game two Fridays later.
