Cosner Harrison continued the streak of Saint
James rushers with 1000 yard seasons as he earned 212 yards on 20
carries and three touchdowns to lead the Trojans, but a supporting
cast assisted him greatly as the first visit to Macon County to
play football in over 30 years proved successful as Saint James
celebrated a 42 - 14 victory over the Booker T. Washington Golden
Eagles of Tuskegee.
It took Saint James less than a minute to light up the
scoreboard. Ethan Beard returned the opening kickoff 32
yards to midfield. Will Wales was the surprise ball carrier
on first down, and he broke loose for a 22 yard run. Beard
caught a 19 yard pass on the next play from K.J. Jackson.
Cosner Harrison picked up the first of his 3 touchdowns on the
next play and Holt Harrison's extra point gave Saint James a 7 - 0
lead only 46 seconds into the game.
The Golden Eagles moved down the field with almost as much ease on
their opening drive. On the fourth play, it appeared
quarterback Elijah Hall had broken loose on a 58 yard keeper for a
touchdown, but a clipping penalty at the Trojan 18 negated the
score. Several plays later, a Hall pass was intercepted by
Jonathan Harris in the endzone and the shutout remained
intact. The Trojans returned the favor as Jeffrey Lewis
intercepted a Jackson pass at the Eagle 24 to stop a scoring
drive. Three consecutive negative plays led to a short punt
and a short field of 41 yards for Saint James. Harrison and
Clint Houser each carried twice for gains, and on first and goal
from the six Will Wales on his second carry of the game picked up
his first touchdown of the season on a six yard jaunt.
Harrison's extra point doubled the lead to 14 - 0 late in the
first quarter.
The Trojans had even better field position to start the second
quarter after an eight yard punt. From the 32, after an
incomplete pass, Harrison rushed for 16, 2, and 2 yards.
From there, Jackson drilled a pass to Jeffrey Ford whose cleat dug
a nice divot in the Eagle endzone just inside the goal line and
just inches away from the pylon for a 12 yard touchdown.
Harrison continued his perfect night of kicking to boost the lead
to 21 - 0 early in the second quarter.
Kevin Taylor picked off the second of Hall's three intercepted
passes and returned it 32 yards to the Eagle 46. After a 2
yard setback, Clayton Craft picked up 14 yards on his only carry
of the evening. Jackson picked up 12 later in the drive to
give Saint James first down at the Eagle 22. Four
consecutive runs by Harrison of 7, 1, 3, and 11 yards gave the
Trojans their fourth touchdown of the first half and a 28 - 0 lead
which would hold up until halftime.
BTW drove as deeply as the Trojan 27 on the opening drive of the
third quarter before Zac Russell intercepted a pass and returned
it to the Trojan 30. On the next play, Cosner Harrison found
a hole in the middle of the Eagle defense and raced 70 yards
nearly untouched for his third touchdown of the game and an eye on
a 200 yard game and a 1000 yard rushing season through less than 6
games. Harrison's extra point gave Saint James a comfortable
35 - 0 lead.
The Eagles finally scored on their next drive. A key pass
from Hall to Anthony Tarver covered 35 yards, and on the next play
Hall found Tarver again for a 12 yard touchdown. Hall added
a two point conversion run and BTW had avoided the shutout to cut
the deficit to 35 - 8 in the third quarter. Both teams came
up just short on fourth down conversion run attempts to end the
third quarter. From the Trojan 38, Harrison picked up 21
yards for a first down on the final play of the third
quarter. Several plays later, an incomplete pass on fourth
and 21 failed and BTW took over on downs. However, they were
forced to punt and Zac Russell returned the ball into Eagles
territory at the 45. Harrison lost a yard on his final carry
of the game, but Beard picked up 16 on a catch and run for a first
down. On the next play, Will Wales got the call for the
third time rushing and used some nice blocking and spinning moves
to garner a 30 yard touchdown run. Niklas Wachowitz was
called in to attempt the Trojan's final point, which he converted,
and Saint James went ahead 42 - 8.
For about 20 seconds. Against mainly reserves, Marquis
Robinson grabbed the Wachowitz kickoff at the 10, rushed straight
ahead and found a gaping hole. He was not caught on his way
to a 90 yard kickoff return touchdown, tied for the third longest
kickoff return touchdown for a Trojan opponent. The
conversion run failed, but the score was quickly 42 - 14.
Saint James was able to run out most of the remaining clock as
backup quarterback Paxton Wingard and running back Luke Moody got
some varsity time in. Tarver caught a 47 yard pass for the
Eagles to advance the ball to the Trojan 18 in the last 30
seconds, but an incomplete pass and a short four yard catch ended
the game and put the Trojans back in winning ways in region play.
