October 30, 2009   Rams Field   Game Conditions:   Very cloudy, windy   Game Temperature:  78  Wind:  SSE 20 - 25

Jeremy Williams accounted for 29 points on four rushing touchdowns and five extra points, and Cameron Westry and Brendan Westry each added touchdowns as Faith Academy built a solid 28 - 0 lead, but then had to regroup as St. James cut the lead to as little as 7 in the fourth quarter before the Rams cashed out a 41 - 28 victory to conclude their season.

The Rams moved quickly on their first possession as six consecutive runs, none less than 7-yard gainers, advanced the ball from the Ram 37 to the goal line - the final 30 yards on a breakaway by Cameron Westry.  Williams, who added all five of his extra points he attempted, gave the Rams an early 7 point lead.

Despite having a tremendous wind at its disposal and at its back, St. James could not make use of it early.  The Trojans did convert a first down on the opening drive, but stalled at their own 40.  A punt snap was fumbled and after a lenghty scramble among several players was eventually picked up by Brendan Westry and he returned 27 yards untouched for the second Faith touchdown.  Williams' extra point gave the Rams an early 14- 0 lead.

After a Trojan punt, Faith again traveled 77 yards on 7 plays, all of them rushing plays and 5 of them double-digit yardage.  Williams scored his first touchdown of the game from 13 yards out, and his own extra point gave the Rams a huge 21 - 0 lead with still time remaining in the first quarter.  After finally entering Ram territory, a bad snap over quarterback Taylor Poe's head eventually led to a recovery by Faith, and on the next play they scored yet again.  A distraught Trojan team allowed Williams to scamper 58 yards virtually untouched for Faith's fourth touchdown in 13 minutes of game time.  The 28 - 0 lead seemed impossible not only to overcome, but to even threaten.

Neither team scored in the remainder of the first half.  The Rams missed a field goal on their following opportunity midway through the second quarter.  However, the Trojans seemed to get a huge spark when a potentially dangerous hit from behind by a Faith player seconds after the conclusion of a play was missed by all the black and white striped referees on the field, but few on either sideline missed the infraction.  That non-call, plus an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against St. James several plays later, motivated the Trojans enough to keep Faith out of the endzone the remainder of the first half and perhaps gave them a spark of life for the second half..

Two plays after an endzone kickoff by Faith Academy, Taylor Poe connected on a crossing pattern with Taylor Wachs for a 43 yard pickup.  Four plays later, Nick Ostrye converted a fourth down with a 7 yard run.  Similar 7 yard runs by Poe, John Slayton, and Slayton again had the Trojans finally on the scoreboard.  Forrest Taylor's extra point was wide, but St. James had scored for the first time in nearly seven quarters, cutting the Ram lead to 28 - 6.

Fortune struck the Trojans as the ensuing kickoff into the wind nearly died and dove straight down into the fumbly fingers of Williams.  Perhaps his only mistake of the evening was the ensuing muff, and the ball was pounced upon by Crawford Steinberg at the Ram 33.  However, on fourth down a desperation pass was intercepted and returned nearly 30 yards, only to have much of the Ram return negated by a penalty.  From their own 12, the Rams travelled 88 yards in 7 plays.  After overcoming a holding penalty, and just one play after what was so nearly a Trojan interception, Williams broke loose from the Faith 26 and swept down the far sidelines on his way to a 74 yard score.  Williams managed to retain enough breath for the extra point, and Faith appeared to have the game solidly in control with a 35 - 6 lead and only 12:40 remaining in game time.

After another endzone kick, the Trojans began moving the ball in big chunks on the ground as they had not prior in weeks.  Slayton, Ostrye, and Poe all had positive runs, and a face mask penalty gave the Trojans first and goal on the Ram 6.  Slayton carried nearly untouched for a score, and on almost exactly the same play, Poe kept from his quarterback position for a two point conversion and St. James was down 35 - 14 with just over 8 minutes remaining.

Forrest Taylor made use of the wind, a kindly bounce, and a Rams "hands team" expecting an onside kick to blast the ball through the endzone, only the second touchback on a kickoff generated by St. James this season.  Backup Darian Williams appeared to have perhaps sewn up the game with a first down run three plays later, but he lost control of the ball and it was picked up by Ostrye and returned to the Ram 20.  After a one yard loss, Poe found his newest threat, quarterback mate Lee Ketzler, down the near sidelines on a pass which came up just four feet short of the endzone.  Poe carried in easily on the next play for the touchdown, and after Taylor's extra point, the margin was down suddenly to 14 points in a game where scores were quick and time was still ample, with over 5 minutes remaining.

A medium pooch kick was recovered, barely, by Faith Academy, but several plays later a punt high up into the howling wind actually traveled backwards 2 yards before being downed by the Rams.  Two plays later,  Poe again found Ketzler smartly between two defenders across the middle for a 44 yard catch and run touchdown, and the Trojans sideline was going wild while the Rams sideline and fans stared almost in disbelief as the 28 point lead just over a quarter ago had slipped to only 7 with still nearly 3 minutes remaining in regulation time.

This time, an onside kick was called for, but Mitchell Lucas recovered for Faith Academy at the Ram 49.  The next two plays gained 14 yards, and Williams was given the ball one more time to break the 200 yard rushing plateau and he broke loose yet again for a 37 yard touchdown to wrap up the scoring as Lucas' extra point attempt was blocked with exactly 2 minutes remaining and the Faith lead back up to 13.  A fine kickoff return by Slayton gave the Trojans possession at the 38, but on fourth down a desperation Poe pass was intercepted by Bracy Murray, and he was just five yards short of a 46 yard interception return for a touchdown.  With less than 90 seconds remaining and St. James exhausted of time outs, the Rams chose to run out the clock on a game with a miserable start but a highly energizing and encouraging finish for the playoff bound Trojans.
