October 8, 2004.  Carlisle Field.   HOMECOMING  Game Conditions:  Cloudy/overcast, light breeze  Game temperature:  70  Wind ENE 5

St. James scored touchdowns on its first five possessions as they held the Rehobeth Rebels almost completely in check, taking offensive and defensive control early while cruising to a 35 - 0 Homecoming Region victory over their first time opponent, the Rehobeth Rebels.

The Trojans took over after a Rehobeth punt at their own 37.  After an incomplete pass, Peter Krothapalli, the game's leading rusher with 21 yards (!), carried twice for 9 and 8 yards, and Tyler Murphy tossed the first of his three touchdown passes, a strike to Bruce Alter over the middle.  Bruce zigzagged around several potential tacklers inside the 15, scooting into the endzone.  Graham Sutter's first of five extra points gave the Trojans a 7 - 0 lead early.

After the second Rehobeth punt, St. James traveled 54 yards in 8 plays.  Murphy tossed a 16 yard pass and run to Matt Ward for a first down, and a long run by Murphy himself was negated by a holding penalty.  However, a second pass of the same kind to Alter moved the ball to the Rebel 12, and two plays later Ward caught his first of two touchdown passes, an 8 yarder.  The kick boosted the score to 14 - 0 late in the first quarter.

St. James, not allowing Rehobeth a first down until the final play of the third quarter, was winning the field position battle mightily.  From their own 45, it took only three plays to score again.  Ward caught a 14 yard pass, Taylor Thompson stole what looked like an interception away from a defender, and darted down the sidelines for 40 yards before being tackled inches short of the goal line, and Drew Hoover, with his first carries ever as a varsity player, scored from officially one yard, and the score was 21 - 0 with still time remaining in the first.

Three plays later, Taylor Thompson intercepted a pass at the Rebel 30 and was just dragged out of bounds at the 14 to prevent a fourth first quarter touchdown.  However, only two plays later, on the first play of the second quarter, Murphy lifted a pass over the middle to his backup quarterback, John Enslen.  Enslen's catch was his first of the year, and the 10 yard pass went for a touchdown.

On St. James' fifth drive, they traveled 58 yards in 8 plays.  After Murphy tossed a pass to Matt Burke and ran for 3 yards, Enslen was called on to carry the team.  Bruce Alter picked up a first down on a run, and two consecutive passes from Enslen to Ward went for 12 and 13 yards, the second for a touchdown.  The extra point bumped the score up to 35 - 0 with still 2½ quarters to play, but the offensive starters were played barely sparingly during the remainder of the game.

Taylor Thompson returned a deflection interception on the next drive to the Rebel 18, but the drive stalled after a fumbled snap, and a Trojan field goal attempt was wide right.  As halftime was nearing, a Rehobeth punt was scooped up by Ward at the Rebel 42, and he weaved through numerous bodies, breaking loose for an apparent punt return touchdown in the last few seconds of the half.  However, a block in the back penalty negated the touchdown, and St. James fumbled away on the Rebel 24 to end any more scoring threats in the first half.

A running clock was in effect in an amazingly quick second half which could not have lasted more than 30 minutes real time.  The Trojans only ran 11 plays from scrimmage in the second half, and the Rebels only 21.  However, 16 of those were on a single drive.  Rehobeth took over with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter, picking up their initial first down on an 11 yard run by Rebel workhorse Chris Niday on the final play of the third quarter.  They would pick up four more first downs on the drive against the Trojan defensive reserves, as the fresh legs of Bart Hall and Jeremy McDonald seemed to energize the Rebels.  The 16 play drive would take up an amazing 10:18 on the running game clock, but a 38 yard field goal attempt at the end failed.

St. James gave the Rebels one final chance to score after an interception return brought the ball back to the Trojan 9 with less than 2 minutes remaining.  However, after two losses on running plays and an incomplete pass, a second field goal attempt from 30 yards missed, and time was allowed to run out in a game which, as you will see below, looks very bizarre statistics-wise considering the Trojan domination of the first 17 minutes of the ball game.
