Game
Conditions: Decreasing clouds, very windy Game
Temperature: 49 Wind: NW 15 - 20
Sequon
Herring scored three first half touchdowns, and added a two point
conversion run and a second half touchdown pass as well as the Trojans
tuned up for the playoffs with a season-ending 30 - 0 shutout of the
crosstown Saint Jude Pirates. The defense shone as well, with
repeated drops of the quarterback in the backfield helping to amass a
minus 50 yard rushing effort, with only 24 yards of passing output from
which to offset.
Saint Jude elected to receive instead of taking the distinct wind
advantage in the first quarter. After returning the kickoff to
the 35, the Trojan defense held the Pirates to 7 yards on 3 plays, but
a roughing the kicker penalty gave the Pirates good field position at
the Trojan 43. However, after a short run, a sack, and an incomplete
pass, the wind came into play as a snap to the punter went over his
head and the ball travelled all the way to the Pirate 22 before being
downed. From there, Sequon Herring carried twice, for 4 and 18
yards, for the first Trojan touchdown of the game. The extra
point attempt was shanked wide, but St. James was up early 6 - 0.
The Trojans kick coverage improved, and after three plays the Pirates
got off the punt, although it only advanced the ball 5 yards.
After a penalty and two short runs, St. James quarterback Rob Cole went
back to pass but was sacked and injured, not to return to the
game. Therefore, Herring was called in on future drives to run
the offense directly from the quarterback position. The Trojan
punt was deflected out of bounds, and Saint Jude began to move the ball
on short passes and defensive penalties. An offensive fumble
recovery after a pass reception gave Saint Jude first down at the
Trojan 27, and by the first play of the second quarter, with the wind
now at their backs, the Pirates were at the Trojan 21. Saint Jude
went for broke, but the pass was intercepted by Will Webber just short
of the endzone and returned to the 35 yard line. From there,
Herring, Mark Berry, and Jason Smith moved the ball exclusively on the
ground. On the eighth play of the 65 yard drive, Herring called
his own number from the 14 for the second touchdown. His two
point attempt conversion run failed, but St. James had scored on both
of its possessions and led 12 - 0.
An into the wind kickoff and a good return gave the Pirates good field
position before a holding call pushed them back. Later, a
defensive pass interference call gave the Pirates another chance to
score at the Trojan 28. However, three plays netted a loss of 5
yards and on fourth down, the wind carried a pass yards over an open
receiver, turning the ball over. After a two yard loss on first
down, Herring swept off left end, broke into the secondary, and
outraced both opponents and the headwind for a 69 yard touchdown run, a
career long for him. He had enough breath to convert the two
point run this time, and the Trojans were up by 20 late in the first
half.
A squib kickoff to offset the wind pushed the Pirates back, and they
could not convert a first down, but they did not allow the Trojans time
to set up for another scoring chance as the halftime siren
wailed. As the second half began, Herring was told to test out
some short pass routes, as at this time the status of quarterback Rob
Cole for the following week was unknown. Webber returned the
opening kickoff to the Trojan 48. No luck on the early passes,
but several runs by Berry and Smith, and a key face mask call, gave the
Trojans first and goal at the 9. On second down, Berry carried in
from the 10, but a clipping penalty pushed the ball back. On
fourth down from the five, Berry could only get as close as the one and
the Trojans turned the ball over. However, on the first play,
Trojan Mark Lawrence burst through the line and tackled the Pirate
runningback in the endzone just as he claimed hold of the football,
giving the Trojans 2 more points.
Despite the wind advantage, which strengthened during half time, Saint
Jude tried a pooch kickoff which was downed by St. James at the Pirate
43. From there, Smith and Herring alternated runs for 18 yards,
before Herring tried another short pass, finding Jay Robertson open in
the flat, and he rushed to the endzone 25 yards for what would be the
final touchdown of the game. Berry was rewarded with the
conversion run giving St. James a comfortable 30 - 0 lead late in the
third quarter.
With a now-running clock, suggested by the shivering referees and
boisterously approved by both teams, the Pirates benefited from a late
hit on the kickoff return, but Webber picked off his second pass and
returned it 22 yards to the Trojan 42. Webber was the receiver of
the final pass completion by St. James on the next play of the game for
another 22 yards, and then Herring finished off his 142 yard rushing
performance with an 11 yard carry on the final play of the third
quarter.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, All-State lineman Bo Wills was
lined up in the backfield for his first, and only career carry, which
lost 4 yards. An incomplete pass on fourth down several plays
later meant the end of the game for the starting skill players.
With both teams ready to call it a night - the clock continued running,
even through changes of possession, which were no more than four plays
long in the fourth quarter for either side. Finally, the siren
sounded and the Trojans began looking forward to the playoffs the
following week with a long trip northwestward to Lamar County in store.
