Marshall's two touchdown runs were the majority of the Eagles' offense,
but it was a key field goal in the last two minutes by Glenn Sylvest
which would give Montgomery Academy enough points for its second win of
the season, defeating the cross-town Trojans 16 - 7 at McLemore Field.
The Eagles picked up more than half of their game rushing yards on the
initial drive, moving 81 yards on 10 consecutive rushing plays for a
touchdown, the final play of the drive a Travis Marshall 4 yard
run. Sylvest's extra point gave the Eagles an early 7 - 0
lead. The Trojans almost duplicated the drive themselves,
covering nearly half of the field on 9 consecutive running plays.
However, on the tenth play, a fourth down and 3 at the Eagle 15,
quarterback Rob Cole was sacked and the Eagles had held.
On the final play of the first quarter, M A shanked a punt out of
bounds, and the Trojans only needed three plays to cover 36
yards. A 12-yard run by Mark Berry, and consecutive runs of 8 and
16 by Sequon Herring had the Trojans on the scoreboard. Keith
Horn's extra point tied the score at 7 early in the second quarter.
A pooch kick was recovered, but then fumbled by the Eagles and the
Trojans had great field position at the M A 45, but the Eagles took
over on the very next play after a fumbled snap. The defense
held, but then the penalty bug struck the Trojans. A dubious fair
catch signal on a punt return pushed the Trojans back to their own
13. After a 20 yard run by Herring gave St. James some breathing
room, a tripping penalty and an illegal procedure pushed St. James
back. However, a great catch of a halfback pass from Herring to
Will Webber gave the Trojans first down on the Eagle 42. Again,
though, on the next play, the Trojans fumbled away possession.
The Eagles moved toward the goal, but this time it was Will Webber on
the defense as he intercepted an Eagle pass at the Trojan 26 late in
the second quarter. With time and timeouts running low, Herring
was the primary ball mover as St. James again threatened, but came up
one yard short on a fourth down and 3 at the Eagle 26. M A
allowed the clock to run out, and a sloppy game was nevertheless
exciting as the teams were tied going into halftime.
The teams traded punts in a quickly moving third quarter, and St. James
punted again out of bounds at the Eagle 26. Golson Foshee
completed several key passes, and the Eagles were threating at the
Trojan 23 entering the fourth quarter. Marshall converted a
fourth down and 8 with a 16 yard reception of a Foshee pass to give M A
a first down at the Trojan 5. After each team burned a timeout,
Marshall carried the five yards for the touchdown, but the extra point
was wide, leaving M A with a tenuous 13 - 7 lead and St. James with a
glimmer of hope.
That hope was dashed when a Herring pass was intercepted at the Eagle
40, and M A began grinding the ball down the field and the time off the
clock. Seven minutes, and the final two Trojan timeouts later,
the Eagles opted for a field goal after being stopped for no gain at
the 7 yard line, and Sylvest's kick was good, pushing the lead to 9
with just under 2 minutes remaining.
M A helped the Trojans' cause with an out of bounds kickoff, and two
plays later Rob Cole connected with Webber with a 33 yard pass and a
first down at the Eagle 34. However, two incomplete passes and a
14 yard quarterback sack pushed the Trojans into a 4th and 24 at the
Eagle 48. Cole broke away and tried to run for the first down,
but was tackled 9 yards down field and the Eagles took over, only
needing one play to run out the clock and secure their second win of
the season, while the Trojans began to look forward to the most
important game of the year, a visit to Catholic and a shot at a
runner-up spot in 3A Area 4, and the playoff berth reward.
