Bo June scored three touchdowns, and
Jermaine Foster rushed for nearly 100 yards, including a 76 yard run on
the first scrimmage play of the second half, as the Highland Home
Flying Squadron overcame an early 15 point lead on their way to
defeating St. James 29 - 24 in the Trojans' 1995 home opener.
The Trojans dominated the first quarter, holding Highland Home to only
4 scrimmage plays and no net yardage. After Highland Home was
offsides on their opening kickoff, Leigh Kennedy returned the next
kickoff to the Trojan 34. A Mark Berry run of 9 yards and a
Sequon Herring run of 4 gave the Trojans their initial first down, and
on the next play St. James went for the bomb as Rob Cole found Herring
open past the defense for a 53 yard catch and run touchdown. Jeff
McIntyre's extra point gave the Trojans a quick 7 - 0 lead only 90
seconds into the game.
The domination continued as the Trojans tried a surprise onside kick
which was drilled into a Squadron upback and fallen upon by Will Webber
at the Squadron 49. This time the drive was exclusively on the
ground, and considerably more time-consuming, as Berry, Herring, and
Cole swapped carries. Herring picked up his second touchdown by
carrying in on third and four from the Highland Home 16. An
offside penalty on the extra point moved the ball halfway to the goal
line, and Cole called his own number on a quarterback off tackle for a
two point conversion run, giving the Trojans a 15 - 0 lead before
Highland Home had run an offensive play.
The Squadron returned the kickoff to decent position, but a penalty,
two short runs, and an incomplete pass netted no yards. The
Trojans were driving again, thanks to an unsportsmanlike conduct
penalty, but a clipping penalty on the next play more than offset the
gained yardage. After a short punt was downed just inside
Highland Home territory, the Squadron began to move the ball despite
another penalty and a near fumble. A face mask penalty against
St. James moved the ball inside the Trojan 40, and a 20 yard pass play
several plays later moved the ball inside the 20. Three
consecutive runs by Bo June, of 17, 1, and 2 yards gave Highland Home
their first score. A well-converted two point pitch and run cut
the St. James lead to 15 - 8.
The Trojans could not move on their next possession, and to avoid a
sure punt block the kick was shanked and downed short of
midfield. A 34 yard carry on third down and 7 put Highland Home
in scoring position, and on the next play June carried in from just
outside the 10 yard line for his second touchdown. A false start
on another two point conversion attempt pushed the ball back, so the
Squadron settled on the feet of Jermaine Foster for the kick, and the
score was tied at 15 late in the first half.
A nice kickoff return by Herring gave the Trojans 59 yards to cover in
about 3 minutes. Herring picked up 11 yards on third down to keep
the drive alive, and a few plays later after a quarterback sack, St.
James began gaining medium yardage on running plays and calling
timeouts. With 15 seconds and a time out remining, on fourth and
7 from the Squadron 34, Herring ran for 12 yards and the first down but
had to use the final timeout. From the 22, Cole connected with
Jay Robertson on an 11 yard pass which stopped the clock momentarily to
move the chains, and then Cole downed the ball with less than 1 second
remaining to set up a Will Webber field goal. The kick from 28
yards was good as the Carlisle Field buzzer was sounding, and St. James
had an 18 - 15 lead at halftime.
But not for long. The Squadron returned the Trojan kickoff to
their own 24, and on first down, Jermaine Foster was given a simple
handoff up the middle. Apparently he had greased himself during
the break because six different Trojans grabbed him, but could not
bring him down, and he finally broke loose 76 yards to open the second
half with a touchdown. A two point conversion run on a fake extra
point pushed the lead back over to Highland Home by 5, at 23 - 18.
Once again, mostly on the legs of Herring and Cole, St. James moved
down the field, but a penalty slowed their progress. A reverse
play on fourth down and 5 at the Highland Home 33 was stopped for a
loss, and the Squadron drove again. June and Foster carried most
of the way, with a few short passes thrown in. Foster carried for
20 yards to set up first and goal just inside the Trojan 10, and on the
next play June picked up his third touchdown of the night. This
time, a two point run was stopped at the line of scrimmage, but
Highland Home was up by two possessions at 29 - 18 late in the third
quarter.
A sizable kickoff return was mostly negated by a holding penalty, as
was a pass play later in the drive. A quarterback sack on the
final play of the third quarter pushed the Trojans back inside their
own 30. After the quarter break, St. James tried some no-huddle
offense, with no success. However, their punt was followed four
plays later by one of the Squadron's. Again, no-huddle meant
no-offense, with an illegal motion penalty and a sack thrown in, but
McIntyre's 45 yard punt at least pushed Highland Home back somewhat at
the fourth quarter heat timeout. On the next play, a fumbled snap
was recovered by Jason Smith at the Squadron 27, and despite another
penalty at the 1 yard line, Herring carried in from the 6 for a
touchdown. Berry tried a two point run to cut the lead to three,
but was unsuccessful. However, St. James still had 3:12 remaining
and were within a touchdown at 29 - 24.
The Squadron had 9 men ready to field an onside kick, but instead St.
James opted for a deep kick which was returned only as far as the
Highland Home 14. St. James stopped June on first down for a yard
loss, but on second down, he broke through the gambling defense for a
75 yard trot, and was only tackled because he was run down from behind
by a less tired defender. St. James began calling timeouts, but 2
June runs gave Highland Home a first down at the Trojan 1. The
Squadron failed to score on the first play, but a delay of game penalty
coupled with the Trojans' last time out allowed the Squadron to kneel
down for their second win in as many games.
