St.
James scored touchdowns on each of their first five possessions and
cruised to a 41 - 6 victory over the visiting St. Jude Pirates to
conclude the 1994 regular season.
The Pirates failed to pick up a
first down on the game's opening possession, but a fine punt pushed the
Trojans all the way back to their own 37 to begin their first
drive. Mark Berry, John Searcy, and Hunter Pappas alternated the
first six carries of the game and picked up 44 yards between
them. A holding penalty on Will Webber's first carry of the game
pushed the ball back, but on the next play quarterback Cade Armstrong
called his own number on his first carry and went the distance, 25
yards, for the initial score. Jason Darneille's extra point, his
first of five consecutive, gave the Trojans a 7 - 0 lead midway through
the first quarter.
The Trojans were immediately primed to score again as Brian Brown
recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the Pirate 28. After
a 3 yard carry by Webber, Armstrong attempted his first pass of the
game and he found Daniel Adams for a 25 yard touchdown, and the extra
point made the score 14 - 0 still in the opening quarter.
St. Jude began driving with the passing game, getting near midfield,
until Pappas picked off the first of four Trojan interceptions at
midfield and returned it to the Pirate 45. Seven plays later, on
the second play of the second quarter, Webber ran 5 yards for a
touchdown and the Darneille kick gave St. James a 21 - 0 lead.
Failing to take advantage of a good kickoff return, St. Jude punted
again and the Trojans had the ball on their own 45. On the first
play, Webber took a handoff off the right side and was absolutely
untouched as he barrelled 55 yards into the endzone for his second
touchdown and a 28 point lead for St. James, still early in the second
quarter.
The Pirates continued to self-implode as another kickoff was fumbled
and recovered by a host of Trojans at the St. Jude 6. After a
half the distance penalty, where St. Jude had 14 men on the field,
Armstrong tossed his second touchdown pass of the game, this one a 3
yarder to Brian Brown, and St. James was in control with a 35 - 0 lead.
St. Jude again drove near midfield, but an interception by Armstrong
was returned to the Pirate 37 to stop that drive and it was the end of
the night, very early, for most of the Trojan starters. Alan
Olsen, brought up from the Junior Varsity, was called on to
quarterback. The second string offense could not overcome a
clipping penalty and a sack on fourth down, but Justin Perelle
intercepted a Pirate pass on the last play of the half to prevent any
scoring by the opponent.
Pappas, Berry, and Webber made a cursory appearance for the St. James
offense to start the second half, as the Trojans drove 65 yards
exclusively on the ground, with Pappas earning the touchdown with the
final 5. Another callup from the junior varsity, Jake McMillan,
attempted the extra point but missed, but the Trojans had scored
touchdowns on 6 of their first 7 possessions on their way to a 41 - 0
lead.
St. James had another good chance to score on their next drive, after a
16 yard punt return and a 15 yard late hit penalty gave them first down
at the Pirate 23. Darneille was given a series at quarterback,
but the Trojans lost a net of 8 yards to turn the ball back over.
The Pirates finally put together four good plays against the Trojan
defensive reserves. Passes of 10 and 17 yards, and a 12 yard run,
were followed by a 30 yard touchdown pass just before the end of the
quarter. A two point conversion pass on a fake extra point fell
short, but the Trojans were still up by 35 with 1 quarter and 1 play to
go.
With a fourth quarter running clock, the Trojan reserves drove the
length of the field, only to have a touchdown on fourth down from the
Pirate 4 to be negated by a holding penalty, and an incomplete pass on
fourth down from the 13 gave St. Jude the ball with one last chance to
score. However, Danny Patterson intercepted the fourth pass of
the evening at the Trojan 41 with just over 2 minutes remaining, giving
St. James enough time with the running clock to allow game time to
expire in four plays as the Trojans looked forward to their first home
playoff game in nine years one week away.
