St.
James scored touchdowns in each of the first three quarters, held off a
furious Calhoun rally late in the third quarter, and pulled away with
several more touchdowns in the final stanza as the Trojans defeated the
Tigers 35 - 20 in their first varsity football meeting ever.
The opening kickoff was returned by the Tigers to their own 33. A
defensive penalty on a fourth and 2 gave them a first down, but four
plays later, an ineligible receiver penalty on what appeared to be a
successful fake punt pass completion forced Calhoun back and into a
shanked punt.
From 51 yards away, the Trojans drove the ball exclusively on the
ground. Hunter Pappas ran for 8, 3, and 6 yards, followed by a
Cade Armstrong quarterback keeper of 19 yards. From there, a
Pappas run of 6 yards was sandwiched by Mark Berry runs of 4 and 5, the
second for the opening score of the game. Following a half the
distance penalty on the extra point attempt, a common occurrance in
this game, Jason Darneille added the extra point for a 7 - 0 Trojan
lead midway through the first quarter.
Starting again deep in their own territory, the Tigers' second first
down also came by the way of a Trojan penalty, this one for pass
interference. However, another Tiger penalty slowed the drive and
a second short punt gave the Trojans good field position at their own
47. However, called and accepted holding penalties on three
consecutive plays to end the first quarter left the Trojan sideline
frustrated and furious. An illegal substitution penalty summed up
a completely ineffective drive for St. James, and a short punt was
downed short of midfield by the Trojans.
Calhoun picked up 12 yards on the ground on their first play, but
another penalty slowed the drive, and an eventual incompletion was
thrown on fourth and 14. St. James was driving but coughed up the
ball on a fumble just across midfield. Calhoun picked up nine
yards on their first two plays, but were stuffed for no yardage on the
next two, and the Trojans took over on downs at the Tiger 47.
This time, they would not be denied the endzone. Pappas picked up
17 on first down. John Searcy, on a rare carry, picked up 6 on
the next play, and then Pappas blew through the line twice for 11 and 8
yards and the Trojans' second touchdown. Darneille's extra point
gave St. James a 14 point lead with less than 3 minutes remaining in
the first half.
The Tigers got a huge return on the ensuing kickoff, back to the Trojan
39. However, a lost fumble on the first play gave the Trojans
almost enough time to run out the clock. A punt left Calhoun with
only 11 seconds from their own 33. A deep pass was intercepted by
Justin Perelle, and he was perhaps but one tackle away from breaking
the return for a 76 yard touchdown. Unfortunately, a tackle just
past midfield ended the return, and the first half.
The Trojans took the opening kickoff and returned it to their own
33. After no gain on first down, the Trojans tried a play out of
the Calhoun play book, the deep bomb. Andy Bell was so far wide
open behind the unsuspecting defense, he had to run back to the ball
which allowed the Tigers to tackle him after a 55 yard pickup on
what would be the only St. James pass completion of the game.
From the 12 yard line, an 8 yard carry by Will Webber gave St. James a
first down, and after an offside penalty Berry picked up his second
touchdown of the game from 1 yard out, and Darneille's extra point
boosted the Trojan lead to a seemingly safe 21 points.
In order to avoid another long kickoff return, the Trojans attempted a
squib kickoff which was fielded on the ground at the Calhoun 40.
A 48 yard pass completion on third down gave the Tigers their first
serious scoring threat of the game. After two plays netted a loss
of one yard, Jamie Hayes scored on third down from the Trojan 15.
A fake pass two point conversion attempt on the extra point failed, but
Calhoun had scored their first six points of the game.
The Trojans picked up 36 yards on first down on a carry by Lynn Jinks,
but turned the ball over two plays later on a lost fumble.
Calhoun took over on their own 22. A four yard gain on a run, and
a fortunate non-loss of the football on a fumbled backwards pass cost
the Tigers those four plus five more yards. From the 17, the ball
was pitched to Willie Patterson, and the same play this time resulted
in an 83 yard touchdown pass to Quincy Rawlings for another Tiger
touchdown. This time, the same fake pass attempt was successful,
and suddenly St. James was only leading by 6 with nearly 14 minutes
remaining in the game.
A key offside penalty helped St. James convert a first down as the
third quarter ended, and five plays later a short run by Pappas along
with a face mask penalty, and two successive unsportsmanlike conduct
penalties moved the ball deep into Tiger territory, where Berry picked
up his third touchdown of the night from 1 yard out several plays
later. After an offside on the extra point, Darneille's kick gave
the Trojans a 14 point lead with still over 9 minutes remaining in the
game.
Cade Armstrong intercepted a deep Calhoun pass on the next drive and
returned it from the Trojan 39 to the Tiger 39, setting up a
time-consuming drive exclusively on the ground. Pappas, on fourth
and three from the five, scored on the eighth play and the extra point
returned the margin to 21 with just over 4 minutes remaining.
Against the Trojan second string defense, the Tigers scored after a 56
yard pass completion on a 2 yard run by Hayes. The Trojans
recovered a line-drive onside kick attempt, and in a relatively
penalty-free game until the fourth quarter, repeated unsportsmanlike
conduct penalties continued to give St. James enough first downs to run
out the remainder of the clock and give St. James a win in their first
area game of the season.
