St.
James built a three touchdown first half lead on three Hunter Pappas
touchdown runs despite a rather slow start, and then added three more
runs by three other players in the second half as part of a 326 yard
rushing performance to defeat the Alabama Christian Eagles 42 - 15.
The game did not start off promisingly for the Trojans as a fumbled
pitch on the first play from scrimmage was recovered by the Eagles at
the Trojan 26. Patrick Fuller picked up 13 on third and 9 giving
ACA a first down at the Trojan 12. However, two plays later, Cade
Armstrong intercepted a Michael Dismukes pass and returned it to the
Trojan 28. From there, St. James embarked on an 11 play drive for
a touchdown. Armstrong's 23 yard run gave St. James its initial
first down, and after Armstrong converted a fourth down play, Pappas
ran for 33 yards to the Eagle 1. Two plays later, Pappas was
rewarded with the 1 yard touchdown carry, and Jason Darneille's extra
point gave the Trojans a 7 - 0 lead late in the first quarter.
ACA could not pick up a first down, and gave the Trojans excellent
position after a punt at midfield. However, the Eagles
intercepted a pass on first down, and only a penalty at the play kept
them from being in Trojan territory. However, a deep punt left
the Trojans at their own 9 yard line to start the second quarter.
A 43 yard run by Pappas on first down quickly got the Trojans out of
the hole, but a delay of game penalty slowed their progress, and after
another punt the Eagles took over on their own 29.
The Trojan defense held again and Armstrong returned the ensuing punt
to the Eagle 39. Pappas, who ran for 122 yards in the first half,
picked up 36 on first down, and two plays later picked up the last
three for his second touchdown; Darneille's extra point doubled the St.
James lead to 14 - 0.
On the Eagles' next drive, a good kickoff return was wiped out by a 30
yard loss on a fumbled reverse attempt which they were lucky to
recover. However, the punt from deep in ACA territory gave the
Trojans a short field late in the first half, and they took
advantage. Pappas made a fine catch of an Armstrong pass to pick
up 17, and despite a clipping penalty, Armstrong converted a fourth and
9 with a 13 yard quarterback scamper. Pappas advanced a fumbled
pitch 14 yards giving the Trojans a first down at the Eagle 5, and
three plays later Pappas picked up his third touchdown of the night
from 3 yards out, and Darneille gave the Trojans a 3 touchdown lead
late in the half.
The Eagles could not get anything going with less than a minute in the
first half, but they moved with authority on their opening drive of the
second half. A 45 yard breakaway run pushed the Eagles down to
the Trojan 19, and on fourth down and 3 from the 12, Dismukes faked a
pass and escaped pursuit into the endzone for a 12 yard touchdown
run. Seth Snow's extra point cut the lead to 14 and suddenly ACA
had some momentum.
The momentum seemed to hold as the Eagles stopped the Trojans on three
short runs, but a clipping penalty on their punt return cost them
valuable yardage, back to their own 16. What likely was the key
play of the game was three plays later, on fourth and one.
Patrick Fuller was stopped at the line for no gain as the measurement
went St. James' way and they were only 25 yards from the endzone.
John Searcy, replacing Pappas in the tailback spot, caught a 9 yard
pass on third and 7 for a first down, and then carried the final 9
yards for a touchdown, and the kick boosted the lead back to 21 late in
the third quarter.
Any ACA momentum was quickly wiped out when Mark Berry recovered an ACA
fumble on their first scrimmage play at the Eagle 31. Seven plays
later, overcoming two penalties inside the 10 yard line, Berry as
fullback picked up a touchdown from 1 yard out, and the Trojans were in
control at 35 - 7 early in the fourth quarter.
The Trojan second squad put together a fine 7 play 57 yard drive on
their next possession. Will Webber and Lynn Jinks carried the
ball predominantly. Jinks had carries of 41 and 13 yards for
first downs, the latter moving the ball down to the Trojan 3, where
Jason Darneille was brought in to carry for a touchdown. Jake
McMillan from the Junior Varsity squad converted the extra point ending
a perfect night for the kickers, as St. James moved ahead 42 - 7 with
just over 5 minutes remaining in the game.
The Eagles managed one more late touchdown against the Trojan second
squad defense. A 51 yard run on fourth and 8 gave the Eagles the
ball on the Trojan 13, and three plays later Fuller carried in from 3
yards out. Dismukes completed a pass to John Cobia for a two
point conversion to give the Eagles their 15th point, but after the
Trojans recovered an onside kick and later benefited from a roughing
the kicker penalty on a punt, they had time to run out the remaining
clock to claim the city victory.
