Trinity scored touchdowns on a defensive
interception return and an offensive endzone recovery of a fumble while
holding St. James to one quarterback sneak score as the Wildcats
defeated the Trojans 14 - 7 in a defensive battle.
The Wildcats fielded a squib kickoff on the ground at their own 28, but
could not earn a first down, nor would they for the entire first
half. The Trojans picked up two first downs after a 10 yard punt
return on a short run by Mark Berry and a 14 yard scamper by Hunter
Pappas which gave the Trojans first down at the Trinity 27.
However, two short runs, a penalty, and a fumbled pitch gave St. James
fourth down and 17, and an incomplete pass stopped the first scoring
threat of the game.
Twice more Trinity could not get their offense going, but their punting
continued to force the Trojans deeper and deeper in their own
territory. To start the second quarter, St. James began at their
own 13, and on third down a Will Webber pass was intercepted by Matthew
Coblentz at the Trojan 27 and he returned it for a touchdown and the
first score of the game. Roman Figurilli's extra point gave the
Wildcats a 7 - 0 lead early in the second quarter.
St. James picked up two first downs on their next drive as they moved
into Wildcat territory, but it was Coblentz again, this time on a
fumble recovery, snuffing another Trojans drive. However, four
plays later, Webber blocked the Trinity punt and it was downed at the
Wildcat 23, giving St. James excellent field position with exactly five
minutes remaining in the half. Cade Armstrong kept the ball on
the ground from his quarterback spot for five consecutive carries, the
fifth leaving St. James with a third down and 8 at the Trinity
11. Pappas picked up 7½ on third down on what many thought
was a poor spot, but Armstrong picked up the first down on the next
play and snuck it in one play later. Jason Darneille's extra
point tied the score at 7 with just 70 seconds remaining.
The Trojans had another chance to score as Trinity fumbled the kickoff
return with the Trojans recovering at the Wildcat 38. An 8 yard
run on first down took up more than 30 seconds on the clock, and a 1
yard run on second down gave the Trojans one chance as they called
their final timeout with 4 seconds left on the clock. A
desperation pass from Armstrong to Brian Brown was incomplete, and the
score remained tied at halftime. St. James had held Trinity to
only 18 yards from scrimmage in the first half, but had only picked up
96 themselves.
After an endzone kickoff to start the second half, St. James could only
pick up three yards on their first three plays. A punt into the
wind gave Trinity good field position at their own 48. A
defensive penalty got the Wildcats going, and they converted their
first first down of the game nearly 27 minutes after it began.
After several runs and a 10 yard pass, Trinity had first down at the
Trojan 11. Two plays netted seven yards, and on third down, Roman
Figurilli carried the ball but it was knocked loose by Trojan defenders
just short of the goal line. However, offensive lineman Joey
Robbins recovered the fumble in the endzone for a Trinity
touchdown. The extra point gave the Wildcats a 14 - 7 lead in
what would be the last score of the game.
A third endzone kickoff gave St. James fair at best starting field
position. An 11 yard carry by Armstrong on first down, and a dead
ball 15 yard penalty several plays later moved the Trojans to the
Trinity 45. However, a holding penalty and a fumble on a reverse
attempt halted the drive, and St. James punted on the final play of the
third quarter, a punt which was returned to the Trinity 43. Seven
plays ate up nearly four minutes of clock time, and Trinity's punt was
downed at the Trojan 12. Armstrong and Pappas nearly alternated
carries, and St. James began moving up the field. A surprise
carry by Webber added 15 yards and the Trojans were at the Trinity
40. However, three plays netted a loss of four yards, and on
fourth and 14 a pass completion only netted 2 yards positive, turning
the ball over to the Wildcats with 130 seconds left.
The Trojans called three consecutive timeouts, but carries of no yards,
12 yards, and 11 yards gave Trinity breathing space and four more downs
to run out the remaining clock time and seal their home victory under
very threatening skies.
