Cade
Armstrong's five yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter
proved to be the only touchdown of the game, but Brian Brown's endzone
interception with less than 100 seconds remaining in the game proved
to be the saver as St. James celebrated Homecoming 1993 with a sloshy 7
- 0
win over the neighboring Catholic Knights.
Neither team could generate much offense in such terrible
conditions. The Trojans managed only 95 yards of offense, all on
the ground; 74 of those thanks to the 28 carries by Cade Armstrong.
Mac Baker recovered a Catholic fumble at the Knight 45 on their initial
drive of the second half. From there, the Trojans traveled 45
yards in 6 plays. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty proved
overly key mid-drive. From the 5 yard line, Armstrong
scored his touchdown and Andy Roberson's extra point gave the Trojans a
7 - 0 lead midway through the third quarter.
St. James almost returned the favor to Catholic by fumbling deep in
their own
territory late in the game. Starting a drive with less than
4½ minutes left at the Trojan 31, Catholic picked up two first
downs and had moved inside the 10 yard line, but Brian Brown
intercepted a
wobbly Knight pass in the endzone with 1:36 remaining, and St. James
was able to keep Catholic from another scoring threat.
The win over a Capital City Conference rival earned St. James a very
respectable (and unexpected) second place in the first ever Capital
City
Conference Varsity Football standings, and a CCC Coach of the Year
declaration for Coach Calahane. However the focus quickly turned
to the final regular season game at Autaugaville. The Trojans
were in the playoffs regardless of the outcome, but a win would at
least delay a trip to Odenville to face the 2A top-ranked St. Clair
County Saints in round one.
