October 29, 1993,
Carlisle Field. HOMECOMING. Game
Conditions: Soaking rain, very wet field
Game Temperature: n/y/a
Cade
Armstrong's
five yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter proved to
be the only touchdown of the game, but Brian Brown's endzone
interception with less than 100 seconds remaining in the game
proved to be the saver as Saint James celebrated Homecoming 1993
with a sloshy 7 - 0 victory over the neighboring Catholic Knights.
Neither team could generate much offense in such terrible
conditions. The Trojans managed only 95 yards of offense,
all on the ground; 74 of those thanks to the 28 carries by Cade
Armstrong.
Mac Baker recovered a Catholic fumble at the Knight 45 on the
initial Knight drive of the second half. From there, the
Trojans traveled 45 yards in 6 plays. An unsportsmanlike
conduct penalty proved extremely important mid-drive. From
the five yard line, Armstrong scored his touchdown and Andy
Roberson's extra point gave the Trojans a 7 - 0 lead midway
through the third quarter.
Saint James almost returned the favor to Catholic by fumbling deep
in their own territory late in the game. Starting a drive
with less than 4½ minutes left at the Trojan 31, Catholic
picked up two first downs and had moved inside the Trojan 10 yard
line, but Brian Brown intercepted a wobbly Knight pass in the
endzone with 1:36 remaining, and Saint James was able to keep
Catholic from another scoring threat.
The win over a Capital City Conference rival earned Saint James a
very respectable (and unexpected) second place in the first ever
Capital City Conference Varsity Football standings, and an
eventual CCC Coach of the Year declaration for Coach Calahane, the
first such ever declaration. However the focus quickly
turned to the final regular season game at Autaugaville. The
Trojans were in the playoffs regardless of the outcome, but a win
would at least delay a trip to Odenville to face the 2A top-ranked
Saint Clair County Saints in round one of the 1993 playoffs.
