Rob Pate, who was named by the Montgomery Advertiser as the (first
ever) Capital City Conference Varsity Football player of the week,
blocked two Thorsby punts (returning one of them for a touchdown),
kicked a field goal, and recorded a sack which resulted in a safety as
the St. James defense shone brightly to open the season as they shut
out the Thorsby Rebels in Thorsby 34-0.
Pate's punt return after his own block for the touchdown totalled 25
yards. Cade Armstrong added a touchdown from 31 yards out,
and Mark Berry scored on an 11 yard run set up by a 37 yard punt return
by Armstrong. Pate kicked a 30 yard field goal, Jason Darneille
added one extra point, and quarterback Walter Moss completed a 2 point
conversion pass to Brian Brown. The Trojans also racked up two
safeties in one game, the first time since the St. Jude contest in
1988. Pate sacked the Thorsby quarterback in the endzone for the
first safety, and Andy Roberson forced a Thorsby fumble back into their
own endzone which was fallen upon by a Rebel for the other two pointer.
