Mark Kitchens
scored three short touchdowns, setting up one with a 65 yard kickoff
return, and the Trojan defense stifled the Wildcat offense to earn their
second win all time against the near-town rivals as St. James shut out
visiting Trinity 28-0.
The Trojans stopped
Trinity on their first drive, with the help of a Wildcat penalty, just
one in a penalty-filled game. St. James took over on their own 41
and
drove 59 yards in 12 plays, converting first downs on three third down
opportunities. Kitchens' 10 yard run gave the Trojans another
first down on the Trinity
2 and from there, Pat Allen called his own number for the first score
of the game. Gavin Finklea's first of four extra points gave St.
James an early 7-0 lead.
Trinity held the
ball for 10 plays on their ensuing drive, overcoming two more penalties
with first downs. A 15 yard pass completion gave the Wildcats
fourth down
and one on the Trojan 15, but the defense stopped a quarterback sneak
and took over possession early in the second quarter.
Neither team
threatened until late in the half. Trinity took over at the St.
James 43 after a short punt, but could only gain 3 yards before a
fourth down incompletion.
With les than 100
seconds remaining, the Trojans used the boundaries, the first down
chains, and their timeouts to march down the field. Barry Nave's
30 yard catch
from Allen gave the Trojans first down at the Wildcat 3 with 11 seconds
remaining, and Kitchens took a toss sweep into the endzone for a
touchdown just before the
halftime horn. Finklea's extra point gave the Trojans a two
touchdown lead and a huge momentum boost going into the locker room.
The momentum
continued as Kitchens returned the kickoff 65 yards to the Wildcat
25. An illegal block penalty pushed the ball back to the 35, but
St. James still
scored six plays later. Ben Freeman's 20 yard catch and run on
third and long moved the ball down to the Wildcat 10. Kitchens
just missed the endzone on first down and
Allen was stopped at the line of scrimmage on a sneak attempt, but
Kitchens carried the ball the last 2 feet for a Trojan touchdown barely
3 minutes into the third quarter and St. James held an improbable 21-0
lead.
The fired-up Trojan
defense held stunned Trinity again with no first down on their next
drive, and St. James took over on their own 40. A 9 yard run by
Kitchens and an 18 yard completion to Tom Smith overcame a clipping
penalty for one first down, and a defensive offside penalty on fourth
down gave the Trojans another first down at the Trinity 25. Ben
Freeman carried for 15 and 9 yards, setting up Kitchens for his third
short touchdown run, and the Trojan fans were heavy with delight as the
lead was four touchdowns with less than 13 minutes remaining in the
game.
