Ben Freeman's yard catch and run from Pat Allen went for a last minute touchdown, sending St. James to their first overtime game in five seasons, and Coleman Brewster's endzone interception ended the game as St. James fought back for a 13-7 win over Millry, a game scheduled just before the start of the season to fill an open week void which carried over from the 1986 campaign.

The Trojans held the ball for a majority of the first quarter on their opening drive.  After Mark Kitchens returned the kickoff to the Trojan 29, twelve consecutive rushing plays had St. James first and ten at the Millry 20.  However, a fumble on the next play ended the threat.  Milly picked up two first downs, the first on a fumble advance by their center of 12 yards on their first scrimmage play.  However, just short of midfield, St. James forced a punt and Kitchens returned the 31 yard punt 30 yards.  A penalty, a sack, and a second quarter change of field sides proceeded the first of three punts on the next drives.  Millry took over on their own 40, and was benefited by a pass interference penalty on third down and long.  St. James did force another punt, but this time the reception was muffed and Millry recovered the ball at the Trojan 11.  From there, it took only two plays to score, as Chris Lockhart carried in from 9 yards.  The extra point was good, and with less than two minutes remaining, Millry had a touchdown lead.

Despite a shanked kickoff out of bounds leaving the Trojans a short field, they could take no advantage to score before halftime.  Millry, with the ball and with momentum, drove as St. James did to start the opening quarter, for 12 plays.  However, a sack took Millry out of field goal range and a punt dribbled into the endzone.  St. James failed to convert a first down, but on the second play after the punt, Pat Allen intercepted a deep pass at the Trojan 24.    Again, St. James concluded the third quarter with its second consecutive three and out, but returned the favor stopping Millry on three plays to begin the fourth quarter.

The Trojans began another extended drive of 15 plays, helped out by a major face mask penalty on a quarterback sack.  However, from the 17 yard line, a trick play pass went incomplete and with less than 4 minutes remaining, time was growing short.  St. James stopped Millry on three plays, and Mark Kitchens' return skills again proved valuable as he brought the punt back to the Millry 40 yard line with under two minutes left.  Another crucial face mask penalty on a quarterback sack gave the Trojans first down on the 28.  Ben Freeman became the go-to guy, as he caught an Allen pass for 18 yards, the first St. James completed pass of the game, stopping the clock with a first and goal inside the Millry 10.  He was one tackle away from a touchdown on a 3 yard run, and was rewarded on the next play with a screen pass where he carried a potential tackler from the three yard line into the endzone.  Gavin Finklea's extra point was true, and with 44 seconds remaining, the game appeared headed toward overtime.

The kickoff was fielded by Millry at the 1, and the receiver backed into the endzone and nearly took a knee which would have resulted in a St. James safety.  However, he did manage to return the kickoff to the 8, well enough out of the endzone for the Millry quarterback to down the ball twice to force the overtime period.

Millry won the overtime toss and elected to play defense first.  From the 10, Will Parker carried for 5 yards on first down, and a defensive encroachment penalty moved the ball down near the 2.  Parker was again called on and rumbled in for the touchdown.  However, Finklea's extra point failed, one of his few misses of the season, and Millry still had hope as they took over.  After an incomplete pass on first down, Coleman Brewster intercepted an underthrown fade pass toward the far sidelines, ending the game and starting the eruption of excitement on the field and in the stands.
