SCORING SUMMARY:
STJ
(3) 6:10 Redding recovered
fumble in endzone
(Johnson kick) 7 - 0
Highlights: In
an area matchup which virtually promised the
winner a trip to the state playoffs, and a matchup between two top 5 ranked teams, Johnny
Redding was the hero as he recovered a
Trojan-fumbled
snap
in the endzone for the only score of the game.
St. James' opening drive of the second half took up nearly half of the
third quarter, and was kept alive by a Squadron defensive
penalty on a fourth down play which advanced the ball to the Highland
Home
7.
Three consecutive running plays moved the ball to
the 1½ yard line, but
the snap was fumbled on fourth down.
Redding was the only one to see the ball come out of the scrum sideways,
and he fell on the ball just inside the endzone for the score.
Highland Home had a chance to tie or win in the last 90 seconds.
With a first down on
the Trojans 5, a quarterback sack, a short run,
and an incomplete pass left the Squadron with a fourth down on the
Trojan 7.
Several Trojans blitzed in an all
out rush on the
quarterback and he was sacked well behind the line of scrimmage,
allowing the Trojans to run out the clock, preserve the victory, and assure
themselves of the highest ranking in school history and their first
ever football
playoff appearance. Redding rushed for 151 yards on 28 carries in
a game which, as might have been expected, an offensive struggle for
both teams against two fine defenses.
