November 6, 1981.
The Alabama
Christian Eagles had only won three games in their previous
five years of
varsity football. However, in 1981,
the Eagles righted their ship on the way to a very impressive
9 - 1 season, their only
loss
to Montgomery Academy costing them a worst to first shot in
the state playoffs, and they concluded their season at home
with a
convincing 28 - 7 win over the Trojans, who ended their season
on the other side of the ledger 1 - 9.
The Trojans actually led in the game, driving nearly the
entire length of the field on their opening drive, with Wyatt
Evans
scoring
from two yards out. However, Joel Best's passing, and
the rushing
combination of Andrew Yates (141 yards) and Mike Newton (78
yards), a
majority of the 315 yards on the ground churned out by ACA,
basically wore down the Trojan defense the remainder of the
game.
Newton and Philippe Cyr caught each touchdown passes for the
Eagles.
