The St. James
Trojans were amazingly a win away from an area championship and
their first ever football playoff appearance in their first
season of eligibility, but the Marbury
Bulldogs claimed it instead. A
pair of Kennys, Carson and Meeks, tore through the Trojans
defense for
a combined 221
rushing yards. Carson also added a two point conversion
pass
reception after the second touchdown. The first
Bulldog touchdown concluded an 80 yard drive. The second
touchdown at the start of the
third quarter resulted from St. James fumbling the opening
second half
kickoff return at their own 28. Marbury returned the
favor,
unfortunately far too
late in the game to be critical, when they fumbled at
their own thirteen, setting
up the St. James' only score of the evening. However, the
Trojans' first season as full members of the
Alabama High School Athletic Association only gave the program
positive energy as they looked toward the following season.
St. James
originally did have a game scheduled for the following Friday
night against West Jefferson at home, but the Tigers had been
asked several weeks before to play in the Birmingham Dental
Clinic, a post-season "bowl" game which supported a mobile
dental clinic in Jefferson County. For more information on
the Birmingham Dental Clinic, which was played from 1948 until
1995, click HERE

webpage. West Jefferson was a rather common participant in
this series. Both teams agreed in advance to merely cancel
the game, thus no forfeit was invoked. St. James was
unable to find a replacement team to play a tenth game in 1975.
