St. James withstood a seventh inning rally after taking
a sixth inning lead themselves as
they defeated the 6A Jeff Davis Volunteers 3-2. The Trojans
scored the first run of the game
in the bottom of the first after a hit batsmen, a single by Tyler
Henry, a fielders choice, and
an RBI single by C.J. Shaw. The Vols tied the game in the
fourth. Michael Dugan walked,
advanced to second on a sacrifice, one of seven successful sacrifices
by the Vols in the two
games, stole third, and scored on a single by Mark Oliver.
However, further damage was
prevented as the Trojans foiled a squeeze play attempt at the plate,
the only unsuccessful
bunt attempt of the day for Jeff Davis. Jason Soriano pitched 5
strong innings for St. James
but got no decision. Taylor Thompson pitched a scoreless sixth,
and got credit for the win
as the Trojans scored two in the bottom of the sixth. Brandon
King singled and his courtesy
runner Matt Ward was driven in one out later by a Ted Brewer
double. Brett Gantt followed
with his own double to drive in Brewer. Mitch Lawrence came in
and pitched the seventh
inning. He allowed one run on a sacrifice fly, and stranded the
potential tying run on third
base while getting credit for the save.

St. James scored three runs in
the first and two in the fourth, enough to hold off the single
run smallball attack of the Volunteers as they swept the doubleheader
with a 5-4 victory in
game two. In the bottom of the first, Jason Soriano was hit by a
pitched, Tyler Henry sacrificed
him to second and reached on an error, Guy Martin doubled in Soriano,
and C.J. Shaw singled in
Henry and Martin. They added two runs in the fourth inning.
Ted Brewer reached on an error
and Soriano walked. Tyler Henry sacrificed them up to second and
third, and Martin picked up
his second and third RBIs of the game with a single. The Vols
scored single runs in four
consecutive innings, and had the potential tying run on third as they
did in the first game.
However, Ted Brewer, with the help of a fine snag of an infielder's
throw by C.J. Shaw at
first base, retired the side scoreless in the seventh for a save.
Adam Mills pitched the first four
innings, giving up 3 runs (2 earned) for the victory.
