Taylor Thompson, Adam Mills, and Ted Brewer teamed up on a two-hitter
while the Trojans pounded out 14 hits
of their own en route to a 9-2 victory over rival Trinity in the first
game of the 2004 Jason Armstrong Memorial
Baseball Tournament. Nine of the hits were for extra bases,
including 7 doubles and 2 homeruns. St. James got off
to a strong start as Jason Soriano led off with a double, and one out
later, Guy Martin and Taylor Thompson each
doubled and drove in a run. After a walk and a single, Ted Brewer
drove in a run with a bloop single over the first
baseman's head. A fine double play on a line drive by Trinity
third baseman Brad Cooper prevented further damage.
Taylor Thompson was solid through three innings, but gave up two one
out walks. A wild pitch advanced each
runner, and Matthew Massey knocked in the first Wildcat run on a
grounder to first. A solid hit by Trey Nix, the
first of only two Trinity hits in the game, plated the second run and
the lead was down to 1. After another walk,
Adam Mills came in and closed out the threat with a four pitch
strikeout. St. James' Drew Gunn added a solo
homerun in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth inning, the
Trojans struck again with an RBI double by Soriano,
a Bruce Alter double, a walk, and a two out two RBI double by
Thompson. Brandon King then ended the inning
with a two run homerun to left center to close out the scoring.
Ted Brewer retired 9 of the 11 batters he faced,
including 4 by strikeout, to earn his second three-inning save.

Highlights: (will be available
later)
This game will be completely recapped at a later date. Ethan
Whittington allowed 4 runs in the first inning, allowing
RBI doubles to Thomas Carroll (2 RBI), Jeremy Nolen, and Brent
Teel. St. James picked up one in the bottom of the
first on a Jason Soriano single, two fielders choices, and a sacrifice
fly by Thompson. Soriano also scored in the third
inning when he walked, advanced to second on a balk, and scored on a
Guy Martin double. The Trojans sent 10 men
to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs, all
unearned. The big blow was a two out bases-clearing double
by Thompson. ACA retaliated with three hits to start the top of
the fifth, and Whittington, who got credit for the win,
was replaced by Mitch Lawrence who picked up his first save as a
Trojan. More information later!
