The Trojans added to their school record win
total with their 27th of the season as they
withstood a Dolphin rally in the sixth inning by retaliating with 4
runs of their own, all
scored on wild pitches, as St. James moved on to the second round of
the 4A Playoffs
with a 7-2 win over Gulf Shores. C.J. Shaw hit the first inside
the park homerun in
Trojan Field history - a high pop which was lost by the right fielder
and bounced into the
right field corner, to give St. James a 1-0 lead which held until the
fifth inning. Brett
Gantt and Jason Soriano led off with singles, and on Tyler Henry's
sacrifice attempt, the
throw to first went well into right field with Gantt and Soriano both
scoring. The Dolphins
closed the gap to 1 with two runs in the sixth. A single by
Justin Lindsay preceded Stephen
Tirador being hit with a pitch. After a sacrifice and a strike
out, Taylor Files' two out
single drove them both in. The bottom of the sixth inning was
bizarre to say the least.
Brandon King led off with a single and Drew Gunn doubled down the left
field line putting
runners on second and third. After a ground out to a pulled-in
infield, King and Gunn each
scored on wild pitches. Gantt worked a walk on a long at
bat. Soriano then executed the
hit and run to perfection, hitting the ball between a running Gantt and
the first baseman,
with Gantt ending up on third. Soriano promptly stole second, and
two more wild pitches
brought home Gantt and Soriano, giving the Trojans 4 big insurance
runs. Taylor Thompson
came in to pitch a perfect seventh inning after Ted Brewer had pitched
6 innings, giving up
only 3 hits and 2 runs, crediting him with the win. Files pitched
a complete game for the
Dolphins, but his defense and his wild pitches led to his late demise.
